Historia
Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son, Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

A complete summary of the end of the Indian Wars
Revisado: 02-02-22
If you have any interest in the plains Indians, the wars, the stories of captives and rescues (I have read many such books) this book is a revelation. It covers all these stories in great detail. So many of the other books (some contemporary with the events) leave many open questions, but this book resolves all that and I was finally able to find out what happened to these people. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Enjoy!

Historia
A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

An insight into Korean history from one family
Revisado: 05-26-20
A fascinating insight into Korean history from the 1930s to the the late 1990s through the lens of one family. Forced by circumstances to migrate to Japan, that too is interesting in how they are treated there. Though the Korean (and Japanese) names are hard for me, it is well read and that helps keeps them straight. The writing takes you straight into the lives of these people and it is hard to put down. I highly recommend it.

Historia
Bill Bryson once again proves himself to be an incomparable companion as he guides us through the human body - how it functions, its remarkable ability to heal itself, and (unfortunately) the ways it can fail. Full of extraordinary facts (your body made a million red blood cells since you started reading this) and irresistible Bryson-esque anecdotes, The Body will lead you to a deeper understanding of the miracle that is life in general and you in particular. As Bill Bryson writes, "We pass our existence within this wobble of flesh and yet take it almost entirely for granted."

Fascinating, beautifully written and read
Revisado: 05-26-20
A fascinating insight into the body and its parts and functions. Too many facts to remember but I could hardly put it down. And now I am listening for the second time. I think I will periodically come back to it. It certainly changed my outlook on a number of things. It is written and narrated by Bill Bryson (beautifully). I want to buy more of his audible books. Highly recommended

Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

Historia
The Mill on the Floss is one of the great works of English literature. It is perhaps the most autobiographical of all Eliot's novels. The relationship between its heroine, Maggie Tulliver, and her brother, Tom, closely resembles that of George Eliot and her own brother, Isaac. The subject of sibling affection was clearly a deeply poignant one for George Eliot - she also wrote a series of beautiful and evocative sonnets entitled 'Brother and Sister'.

So, I worked to find a way to become healed and in remission.

A real insight into living with colitis issues
Revisado: 11-06-19
This writer is brave and frank in discussing the issues and the embarrassing incidents that these issues cause. I admire his courage and insight. He has found his own solutions that may be helpful to others, but even if not just hearing him explain his journey is very enlightening

Historia
The pursuit of a childhood dream has taken Suzy Fincham-Gray on a journey in veterinary medicine from pastoral farms on the English-Welsh border to emergency rooms in urban American animal hospitals, with thousands of stories collected along the way. In this unforgettable literary debut, she writes about some of the most emotionally challenging and rewarding cases of her career. Like many physicians, Fincham-Gray tends to see her patients at often life-or-death moments. While dramatic, these stories expand into deeper explorations of our complex, profound relationships with the animals in our lives.

Fascinating insight by a specialist vetinarian
Revisado: 05-05-18
This is a fascinating book - read by the author. It is different from most other writing by vets as the stories are not superficial but in some depth but still understandable for the layman. She is open and honest about her own doubts and difficulties. I have owned many dogs but I now see the veterinarian side quite differently. I was hooked and it was hard to interrupt when my dog walks were over.

Revisado: 12-14-15
Wow, wow, don't miss this book. I read it first and was so mesmerized I wanted to hear it read to me to savor it again and in more detail. It is beautifully read. This is a powerful emotional book about 4 young men who meet at college and then we follow them through the years as they make their careers and marriages, etc. The focus is on Jude (he will always haunt you) and his secret, dark past and how it affects all their loves. The friendships, the intimacies are breathtaking. It is a long long book but delicious all the way. I highly recommend it.
