Historia
Chinese was the earliest truly global cuisine. When the first Chinese laborers began to settle abroad, restaurants appeared in their wake. Yet Chinese has the curious distinction of being both one of the world's best-loved culinary traditions and one of the least understood. For more than a century, the overwhelming dominance of a simplified form of Cantonese cooking ensured that few foreigners experienced anything of its richness and sophistication—but today that is beginning to change.

Knowledgeable and awful
Revisado: 11-16-23
Dunlop knows a lot about Chinese food. However someone must tell her that a whole book with “the West” vs “the Chinese” is unbearable and nonsensical. About nonsense: she seems to have completely assimilated all the most ridiculous cliches that many middle class, rather close minded and little traveled Chinese people may have. But why should she care, as she declaims how fluent her Chinese is and how sinicised she is! Terrible book, in spite of of the knowledge. If I hear more “west” and “western” this month I may scream

The prize-winning and best-selling author of Say Nothing presents a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. Uncovering so much evil
Revisado: 08-25-22
At times, this is a painful story to listen to. It takes us into the very dark realm of human greed and disregard for other people's lives, and the powerful denial that accompanies it. Yet it is an extremely important investigation, and a powerful book, written with great sensitivity. I absolutely recommend it. The book is read by the author, and he is a pleasure to listen to.

Historia
In We Don't Know Ourselves, Fintan O'Toole weaves his own experiences into Irish social, cultural, and economic change, showing how Ireland, in just one lifetime, has gone from a reactionary "backwater" to an almost totally open society - perhaps the most astonishing national transformation in modern history. O'Toole narrates the once unthinkable collapse of the all-powerful Catholic Church, brought down by scandal and by the activism of ordinary Irish. He relates the horrific violence of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, which led most Irish to reject violent nationalism.

Don't miss this book
Revisado: 08-25-22
This is a very beautifully read story of contemporary Ireland and a personal memoir. The way in which O'Toole manages to weave his story into the larger history of contemporary Ireland makes this a memoir that is never overpowered by the author's self obsession. It is elegantly narrated, with a beautiful sense of humour which always bears in mind the humanity of the people that provoked it, and extremely informative. I have read O'Toole's articles, but I wasn't sure I would really listen through 22 hours of Irish history (I am not particularly focused on the country) but it has been an absolutely rewarding listen. Aidan Kelly is a wonderful reader. I can't recommend this book enough!

Historia
Rachel DeLoache Williams’ new friend Anna Delvey, a self-proclaimed German heiress, was worldly and ambitious. She was also generous - picking up the tab for lavish dinners at Le Coucou, infrared sauna sessions at HigherDOSE, drinks at the 11 Howard Library bar, and regular workout sessions with a celebrity personal trainer. When Anna proposed an all-expenses-paid trip to Marrakech at the five-star La Mamounia hotel, Rachel jumped at the chance. But when Anna’s credit cards mysteriously stopped working, the dream vacation quickly took a dark turn.

Excruciating details and of zero interest
Revisado: 04-02-22
I can’t imagine why this book was even published! It could maybe hold its own as an article, but blow by blow minute by minute “i texted she answered” ? A terrible listen. Considering that all the lost money was pardoned by AmEx and so much money was made afterwards too, including for this sorry book, maybe a slightly deeper narrative with some research into scams, scammers psychology or victims’ trauma (not just the author’s) would have made this bearable. As is, I strongly don’t recommend it

What is the point of this book?
Revisado: 04-28-20
A rambling lengthy tale of Ms Bone going to look for mushrooms with other amateurs and having nice or not so nice dinners. Maybe it gets better after three hours - I had wasted enough time by then. Lengthy pointless descriptions and a lot of uninteresting detail, but not about mushrooms: about the quirks of US mushroom enthusiasts.

Historia
In this remarkable culinary biography, Rae Katherine Eighmey presents Benjamin Franklin's experimentation with food throughout his life. At age 16, he began dabbling in vegetarianism. In his early 20s, citing the health benefits of water over alcohol, he convinced his printing press colleagues to abandon their traditional breakfast of beer and bread for "water gruel", a kind of porridge he enjoyed. Franklin is known for his scientific discoveries, including electricity and the lightning rod, and his curiosity and logical mind extended to the kitchen.

Great story ruined by bad reader +no downloadables
Revisado: 04-02-18
What disappointed you about Stirring the Pot with Benjamin Franklin?
The reading is annoying, unclear and cheerful in all the wrong bits. Requires excessive concentration to understand what the narrator is reading, and for the French part, once again, the French pronunciation is dismal. Really, if you are reading a book partially set abroad, the narrator should have at least a passing ability to pronounce that language. Otherwise, you are so busy cringing that you have no idea what is being said. Dreadful, dreadful narrative. Also, the book comes with recipes. Which you cannot download. So totally useless.
What did you like best about this story?
the story is excellent. Killed by narrator and lack of downloadables.
What didn’t you like about Pam Ward’s performance?
Artificial, cheerful for no reason, unclear, bizarre pace, and terrible at pronouncing foreign words.Puts weird stress in random words, as if this was some kind of romance novel. It's history, so you really wish she was less into theatrics and more into clarity.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
disappointment.
