Historia
She was leaning against the door. Her smile was a sickly twisted grimace; the sort a prisoner gives a judge when he's asked if he has anything to say before he's sentenced. Russell Haxby is a ruthless used-car salesman obsessed with manipulating and cavorting with married women. In this classic of hard-boiled fiction, Charles Willeford crafts a wry, sardonic tale of hypocrisy, intrigue, and lust set in San Francisco in the early '50s.

Not worth the time.
Revisado: 04-28-25
The narrative performance was well done, the story itself was meaningless and I would have given it zero stars if Audible allowed it. Spoiler alert-----this is a convoluted telling of a heartless guy leading a woman on for sex and then dumping her as soon as he drives her home. Even taking into account the time period, I don't know why the author bothered with this other than to earn a few dollars for convincing someone to publish it. Just as the protagonist exploits the young woman, the author does the same to the publisher and the reader. In the end we all get screwed.

Bizarre and humorous ravings
Revisado: 03-20-25
I enjoyed these bizarre and humorous ravings of an unreliable narrator/Astronaut. This was much more entertaining than Malzberg's earlier work, The Falling Astronauts, although both are worth exploring.

Historia
The space program has finally lost its novelty, and a jaded public hardly notices another moon launch. Skilful PR men preserve the illusion that the missions have become routine. But astronaut Richard Martin can tell a different story. Of panic in deep space, of crewmen pushed beyond breaking point, of official indifference towards his own shattered life. Martin is effectively put under wraps - until the pilot of a moon capsule, loaded with nuclear weaponry goes berserk and a nightmare develops, threatening to engulf the world - a nightmare that only Martin could end.

Devastating satirical spin on the Apollo program
Revisado: 03-13-25
I've never read a novel so acidly critical of the Apollo space program. This approach would ring absolutely true of musk's space company, not so much the actual efforts in the 1970s Malzberg is attacking. Still a fascinating slow burn which is very disturbing by the final act.

Earth was a planet of incompetents, but Simmons was the greatest loser of all. It seemed as if the powers of the Universe were concentrated on grinding his small soul into ultimate insignificance, until the aliens came. To them, Simmons was the most important human on the planet - for only through his mind could they overcome this world.

This is an obscure novel recommended on YouTube by someone I respect. I gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised. Malzberg wrote a very strange novel here, occasionally his prose is sublime. I am going to read more of his works and see if they can match what he did with this one.

Historia
It was supposed to be a moment of great optimism, a cause for jubilation. The Congo was at last being set free from Belgium—one of seventeen countries to gain independence in 1960 from ruling European powers. At the helm as prime minister was charismatic nationalist Patrice Lumumba. Just days after the handover, however, the Congo’s new army mutinied, Belgian forces intervened, and Lumumba turned to the United Nations for help in saving his newborn nation from what the press was already calling “the Congo crisis.”

Eisenhower, the CIA, Belgium and the U.N. all had blood on their hands.
Revisado: 02-22-25
As a U.S. citizen I am very disappointed in the role Eisenhower and the U.N. played in Lumumba's murder. Here we are raised on the discourse of Eisenhower being the saintly hero of WWII, the "Supreme Allied Commander", but we are not informed of his activities encouraging assassinations of democratically elected leaders. Also the role of the U.N. in standing aside and allowing Lumumba to be butchered is disgusting. This is a compelling and necessary history to set the record straight on what was done in our name and with our tax dollars.

Historia
Lorraine Hansberry, who died at thirty-four, was by all accounts a force of nature. Although best-known for her work A Raisin in the Sun, her short life was full of extraordinary experiences and achievements, and she had an unflinching commitment to social justice, which brought her under FBI surveillance when she was barely in her twenties. While her close friends and contemporaries, like James Baldwin and Nina Simone, have been rightly celebrated, her story has been diminished and relegated to one work—until now.

Dark and violent, imaginative ending to the saga of Harry Angel and Johnny Favorite
Revisado: 11-13-24
The novel was very similar to a Film noir movie, infused with heavy doses of Satanism and ultraviolence. Enjoyed hearing deep background on the early days of Johnny Favorite and how he came to be so evil. This is not everyone's cup of tea, I would say that if you are a huge fan of the movie Angel Heart and the source novel Falling Angel, you will enjoy this. Ending was not what I hoped for but the joyride getting there was worth it.

Historia
In December 1937, in the capital of China, one of the most brutal massacres in the long annals of wartime barbarity occurred. The Japanese army swept into the ancient city of Nanking and within weeks not only looted and burned the defenseless city but systematically raped, tortured and murdered more than 300,000 Chinese civilians. Amazingly, the story of this atrocity- one of the worst in world history- continues to be denied by the Japanese government.

Revisado: 08-03-24
Surprisingly, the atrocities themselves are not dwelled upon endlessly to numb the reader. It is the attempts to this day to minimize or even erase the horror of what was done that will outrage and sadden the listener. A true masterpiece of historical research. We all owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to Ms. Chang.

The only problem is that when technicians attempt a memory implant of a spy mission to Mars, they find that real memories of just such a trip are already in Quail's brain. Suddenly, Quail is running for his life from government agents, but his memories might make him more of a liability than he is worth.

This is very short, but gives you a good taste of what PKD is about. Does not have much in common with the Hollywood versions made with Arnold or more recently, Colin Farrell.
