OMG!!! This blew me away!!!

I have always enjoyed fun audio drama titles, especially from Dirk Maggs, Dagaz Media, Wireless Theatre, Crazy Dog and, of course, AudioComics (Locke & Key, Titanium Rain, etc). But Vault Of Horror simply blew me away!

I have the Archive from Dark Horse, and I was curious and excited to give this adaptation of it a listen. WOW!!! I tried to follow along with the originals, but AudioComics ADAPTED the stories, giving them a much-needed breath of fresh air and originality, and bringing the stories into the 21st century (smartphones, mixing up characters, diversity), and an incredible soundscape.

And KEVIN GREVIOUX, as the voice of the Vault-Keeper, rocks!

MAGNIFICENT!!! Listen with EARBUDS!!!

OMG!!! I love this series, and was somewhat anxious as to how any production, other than with RC Bray narrating solo, could match (or even eclipse) his performance. Well, no need to worry. Slip in your earbuds and buckle in for an adrenaline-fueled auditory roller-coaster! This has laughs, adventure, romance (and bromance!) aplenty. And the performances! Stellar to a fault for every human/monkey, lizard and/or AI in the cast!!! The celebs (Quinto, Mulgrew, and Picardo) are hysterical, and the rest of cast are fantastic. Thank you, Craig Alanson, for this awesome gift. Not for everyone in the family, as it has some mature language. But for the PG audience - WOOOOOOOOOWWWWWEEEEEEE!!!

Oh, and 'Booooooo' the snowflake nay-sayers - this is an audio DRAMA; it's supposed to sound like a movie or a tv show. I love audio dramas/plays/movies for that very reason. Nothing beats the "movie' frames in your mind's eye. That's why I'll grab anything produced by British producer, Dirk Maggs... or AudioComics, Crazy Dog Theatre, Pocket Universe, Firesign Theatre, and Big Finish.

And now Dagaz Media is added to that list!

Also, this is from Skippy's perspective - it's HIS Space Opera. That's why it's so campy and fun. If the monkey's can't wrap their heads (or ears) around that, then let Skippy get them a box of crayons (and some bah-nanas) and draw it out for them.

My BIGGEST PIECE OF ADVICE follows:

Wear EARBUDS/HEADPHONES, so as to capture every aspect of Homefront's lush and multi-textured landscape.

OMG - This production surpasses all expectations!

What made the experience of listening to FREE: Locke & Key the most enjoyable?

Aside from the amazing story, which I was already familiar with, being a fan of the graphic novel series, the production values for the audio are akin to a blockbuster film... but without the visuals. The acting is superb, a stellar cast; sound design is rich and full, with exceptional music score; and the recording sounds like each scene was actually placed in the physical space in which it occurred... rather than a studio.

I've only finished Books 1-3 in a couple of sittings. Books 4-6 await!

Who was your favorite character and why?

All the characters, as performed by this cast, are mesmerizing. But for me, my favorites are the mom, Nina, and the 'Echo' in the well (played by the ever so talented Tatiana Mislay!).

Nina has so much depth and realism to her character, and the trials she goes through are so uncomfortably real. I hear "Every Mom" whenever she appears.

Tatiana Mislay plays the thing in the well with the most enticingly sultry voice, but that allure is tempered with a chilling danger. We're talking' the Sirens luring young ones to their doom!

Oh yeah, and Stephen King (!!!) plays a little role. He's hilarious!

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

They're not really "narrators", but actors playing characters. They were all fully invested in their roles... not a false note among them (so far - I have the other half to get through!). It's truly like listening to a movie with a blindfold.

I listened to The Starling Project, and I loved it.

Locke & Key is heads and shoulders above that excellent production! Kudos to Audible for producing this audio feast for the ears and imagination (and to Joe Hill, as well)!

Awwwww, Frank Muller, you were the best!

Frank Muller's performance is so magnificent, it's a whole different level of story-telling.!

What does Frank Muller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He breathed life into it! Better than the movie. Plus there are far more details in the book than can be brought into a film.

Edoardo Ballerini can do no wrong!

Gorgeous book, beautifully rendered by one of the best narrators out there.

Narration.

Edoardo Ballerini totally invests himself in the material he reads, making one feel as though he's experiencing everything he relates. There's a freshness and honesty to his narration rarely found in others out there. Bravo!

RAY PORTER ROCKS!

Absolutely. The story's captivating enough, even with huge gaping holes throughout. But it's Ray Porter that lifts it from the mundane to a captivating listen.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The narration!

What about Ray Porter’s performance did you like?

Everything. His characterizations are top-notch.

What would have made Ender's Game Alive: The Full Cast Audioplay better?

Better production values. I thought I was getting an audio drama, but this was more of a multi-voiced performance with little to no sound effects or music. Really dry and bland.

Would you be willing to try another one of Full Cast Recording’s performances?

It'd have to be from a different production company.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Ender's Game Alive: The Full Cast Audioplay?

Pretty much all of it, recasting it and putting in a movie soundtrack.

Yawn! I couldn't even finish it. 30 minutes tops was what I endured.

Would you listen to The Starling Project again? Why?

Absolutely. The production values are incredible. I listened with headphones and was immediately transported to a mind-movie. There are also so many twists and turns, it definitely warrants a second, if not third, listen.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mustapha and Devon. They were the quintessential buddy pair, with a lot of light humor and tension.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The storyline is fairly decent, with a dynamite opening and a number of false trails that keep you guessing and scratching your head. It maddeningly ends without the villain being caught (not a spoiler), inviting the hope of a sequel.

Any additional comments?

I listen to a lot of audio drama, mainly British (Perfectly Normal, Crazy Dog, BBC) because Americans seem to have lost the ability to create in this medium. But this production has canceled those doubts, and I look forward to more Audible Dramas!
