Historia
Published anonymously on January 10, 1776, Thomas Paine's legendary work made the case for American independence. An immediate sensation across the thirteen colonies, Common Sense extolled Paine's belief that government should be simple and represent the will of the people, acting not as an oppressor but as a body to protect society. His clear and persuasive argument appealed to the common people, impressing on them the importance of secession from Great Britain.

I love that this man, almost single-handedly, gave clear and concise reason for the most audible b**tchslap to the English monarch in history, one that was heard around the world.

Historia
Remarkably relevant, beautifully written, and filled with wit and wisdom, these three essays by Bertrand Russell allow the listener to test the concepts of the good life, morality, the existence of God, Christianity, and human nature. "What I Believe" was used prominently in the 1940 New York court proceedings in which Russell was judicially declared "unfit" to teach philosophy at City College of New York. "Why I Am Not a Christian" concludes that churches throughout history have retarded progress and states that we should instead "look to our own efforts here below to make this world a fit place to live in." Finally, "A Free Man's Worship", perhaps the most famous single essay written by Russell, considers whether humans operate from free will.

This is a book for a rainy afternoon. philosopher Bertrand Russell took a hard, critical vlew of himself and wrote down the results. It is both elegant and piercing it it's summation of what one of the greatest minds of the last century explored and believed.

Very long and detailed first person account of the fascists and sociopaths who tried to change the world into what it has become today. Some of Hitler's speeches have shown up very recently in political arena and it's very clear to me now why MAGA people think the way they do...

Historia
Danny North is the first Gate Mage to be born on Earth in nearly 2,000 years, or at least the first to survive and claim his power, for families of Westil in exile on Earth have a treaty that requires the death of any suspected Gate Mage. The wars between the families had been terrible until at last they realized it was their own survival in question. But a Gate Mage, one who could build a Great Gate back to Westil, would give his own family a terrible advantage over all the others and reignite the wars. So it was decided that they all had to die.

Mythology told with style, elegance, humour & wit.
Revisado: 05-08-21
I love mythology. Let me reiterate, I LOVE mythology!!! I studied it in school and loved every minute of it. I watched the Bill Moyers interviews with the legendary Joseph Campbell more times than I have fingers. I honestly thought I would never be entertained, amused or as addicted to someone talking about mythology as I have with Stephen Fry. His wry witticisms, his character voices and singular style retelling of the old tales really made these characters spring to life. I highly recommend it to everyone I know and have created legions of fans for his novels. Do yourself a favour and give it a try.

Sparked by a controversial debate in February 2014, Bill Nye has set off on an energetic campaign to spread awareness of evolution and the powerful way it shapes our lives. In Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation, he explains why race does not really exist; evaluates the true promise and peril of genetically modified food; reveals how new species are born, in a dog kennel and in a London subway; takes a stroll through 4.5 billion years of time; and explores the new search for alien life, including aliens right here on Earth.

Being a scientist myself I was intrigued by the title. Bill Nye’s enthusiasm and thought processes show me why Carl Sagan was so fond of him. I’m glad someone Is teaching people TO think instead of those who try to tell people WHAT to think.

Historia
In the mid-1970s, scientists began using DNA sequences to reexamine the history of all life. Perhaps the most startling discovery to come out of this new field is horizontal gene transfer (HGT), or the movement of genes across species lines. For instance, we now know that roughly eight percent of the human genome arrived not through traditional inheritance from directly ancestral forms, but sideways by viral infection - a type of HGT. In The Tangled Tree David Quammen chronicles these discoveries through the lives of the researchers who made them.

A truly fascinating book with marginal narration.
Revisado: 11-23-18
While I found the book scintillating and for the most part the narration good there were times that the narrator decided to use tedious accents when reading quotes from foreign authoritative figures (outside sources). Towards the end of the book they became simply intolerable, especially the German and Russian accents. If he had just stuck to the script I would have given it five stars across the board.

To geologists, rocks are beautiful, roadcuts are windowpanes, and the earth is alive, a work in progress. The cataclysmic movement that gives birth to mountains and oceans is ongoing and can still be seen at certain places on our planet. One of these is the Basin and Range region centered in Nevada and Utah.

Most soporific narrator EVER!
Revisado: 01-04-18
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
As much as I love geology it was very hard listening to this guy read. He has all the fire of a poorly educated Baptist preacher who wonders why everyone snores during his ash dry sermons. This was a great mistake to buy when the book itself would have been much more satisfying.
What other book might you compare Basin and Range to and why?
The Old Testament
God kills everyone in the end.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He was so monotone and lifeless like an automaton that the book became increasingly tedious.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The content was great, the performance was absolutely terrible.
Any additional comments?
There should be a warning about operating heavy machinery or driving while listening to this book...

Now you can find out-in a series of 24 vibrant lectures from a leader of the NASA-supported team studying the origins of life in the universe and also one of the nation's foremost science educators.

Robert M. Hazen is quickly becoming my favourite.
Revisado: 12-20-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Most assuredly. As I work in a museum I go from biology, paleontology, ornithology, anthropology and geology. We have about 10,000 kids from preschool to college come through our doors every year. Dr. Hazen's books and papers have been a great help for me in answering not only common questions but those intriguing ones that come out of left field.
What about Professor Robert M. Hazen’s performance did you like?
The man is seriously intelligent and it shows in the incredible ability to take the most difficult premise and explain it in a way that is easily digestible and memorable.
