Historia
A richly detailed account of the hard-fought campaign that led to Antietam Creek and changed the course of the Civil War. In early September 1862, thousands of Union soldiers huddled within the defenses of Washington, disorganized and discouraged from their recent defeat at Second Manassas.

Learn how to pronounce military terms please!!
Revisado: 12-31-24
I'm not finished with this book yet but I am very impressed by the scholarship and level of detail. There is a big however, the narrator needs to learn how to pronounce military terms. I whince everytime he says adjutant as "ad ju dent" it should be pronounced "ajəd(ə)nt". This is not some obscure military term but one that is quite common. This not unique to this narrator it is something that I have come across in several military history books on audible. If you are going to narrate a military history book take the time to learn how to pronounce military terms. End of rant

Historia
In Too Far on a Whim, Tyler A. Pitrof presents a high-spirited revision of the US Navy's commitment to high-steam propulsion systems, the mainstay of its World War II fleets. Pitrof's research persuasively demonstrates that in its war against the Imperial Japanese Navy, the US Navy succeeded despite its high-steam propulsion systems rather than because of them. Pitrof provides an account that extends far beyond technology and into matters of naval hierarchies and bureaucracy, strategic theory, and ego.

I good book but certianly not for everyone
Revisado: 10-31-24
I really enjoyed this book but I have to provide some context. I am a retired Naval Officer who spent his first 3 years in the Navy on a "high steam ship" (1200psi). My first 2 yrs were spent in the Engineering Dept. I am also a history geek so the book was easy for me to enjoy. Having said that it can be a bit dry and the narrator was also quite a bit dry in his delivery. I would call this a niche history book.

Historia
Most Americans dismiss George III as a buffoon - a heartless and terrible monarch with few, if any, redeeming qualities. The best-known modern interpretation of him is Jonathan Groff's preening, spitting, and pompous take in Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway masterpiece. But this deeply unflattering characterization is rooted in the prejudiced and brilliantly persuasive opinions of 18th-century revolutionaries. After combing through hundreds of thousands of pages of never-before-published correspondence, award-winning historian Andrew Roberts has uncovered the truth.

Outstanding work of history and biography
Revisado: 03-31-23
I am an avid student of history and found this to be one of the best works I have come across. I have read/listened to some of the more recent scholarship on the American Revolution so was not completely surprised by Roberts' telling of the British side of the story, however, his biographical narrative on George III broke new ground. His use of George's correspondence allows the reader/listener to get an excellent portrait of the King revealing the good and bad. Also his research should put to bed the "Madness of King George" explanation of the King's illness as false and misleading. The book also paints an outstanding picture of British politics and culture of the late 18th and early 19th century. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
It was 1778, and the recent American victory at Saratoga had netted the US a powerful ally in France. Many, including General George Washington, presumed France’s entrance into the war meant independence was just around the corner. Meanwhile, having lost an entire army at Saratoga, Great Britain pivoted to a 'southern strategy'. The army would henceforth seek to regain its southern colonies, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, a highly profitable segment of its prewar American empire.

Conflicted verdict
Revisado: 07-26-21
I really struggled with this book. I thought overall from a history point of view is was pretty good. The narrator made it hard to listen to at times. The delivery was flat and very monotone and his way of pronouncing things was jarring. The author often got in his way with his love of language. This is a narrative history not some period piece novel. Alliterative descriptions are okay when used sparingly but they we very much over used in this work. I could probably recommend the book to someone to read however I wouldn't recommend the audible version.

Historia
Pickett's Charge is a detailed analysis of one of the most iconic and defining events in American history. This book presents a much-needed fresh look, including the unvarnished truths and ugly realities, about the unforgettable story. With the luxury of hindsight, historians have long denounced the folly of Lee's attack, but this work reveals the tactical brilliance of a master plan that went awry. Special emphasis is placed on the common soldiers on both sides, especially the non-Virginia attackers outside of Pickett's Virginia Division.

BAD!!!!!!
Revisado: 09-11-16
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator is the only positive I can give this book. Unfortunately he was saddled with a terrible book
Any additional comments?
Tucker's work is one of the worst I have come across. I admire Lee as much the next guy but Tucker give's Douglas Southall Freeman a run for his money. His arguments should make most students of Civil War military history cringe. His writing style is an excellent example of how not to write a modern military history. I'm just glad I didn't spend the $$ for a hardback of this work. If I could have given less than one star I would have.

Historia
The devastation of Pearl Harbor and the American victory at Midway were prelude to a greater challenge: rolling back the vast Japanese Pacific empire island by island. This masterful history encompasses the heart of the Pacific War - the period between mid-1942 and mid-1944 - when parallel Allied counteroffensives north and south of the equator washed over Japan's far-flung island empire like a "conquering tide", concluding with Japan's irreversible strategic defeat in the Marianas.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
For the book and the author's take on the subject. Disappointed in the narrator. A trend with many of the military history audible books I have noticed is narrators who have difficulty pronouncing military terms as well as creative and annoying ways of pronouncing names and places. I would hope that audible or who ever would place an emphasis on making sure the narrators have a handle on military terms and the geography they are reading.
Very frustrating to hear the same term or place mispronounced time and time again.
End of rant!
Would you listen to another book narrated by P. J. Ochlan?

Historia
This book describes the often overlooked World War II campaign for Norway - a complex series of battles in which Hitler out-gambled Churchill in order to secure a vital resource lifeline for the Third Reich. After Hitler conquered Poland and was still fine-tuning his plans against France, the British began to exert control of the coastline of neutral Norway, an action that threatened to cut off Germany’s iron-ore conduit to Sweden and outflank from the start its hegemony on the Continent.

Great book hampered by poor narration
Revisado: 04-07-15
Where does Hitler's Preemptive War rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The subject and quality of the research was excellent.
How could the performance have been better?
You would think that the narrator would have been pre-screened for his/her ability to pronounce German, names and words. The narrator's lack of ability to pronounce German names and terms makes the book difficult to listen to at times. This is a book about a German Campaign get a narrator that has the ability to pronounce German words and military terminology, both German and English correctly. I will give him a pass on the Norwegian words and names.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not to harp on the narrator but there are times I wanted to stop listening because of his terrible pronunciations.
