Sir Pterry at his gloriously snarky best

I started listening to this audiobook and quickly realized that it's not a good idea to be eating or drinking anything while doing so.

I'm a big fan of music, including classical, opera, and musicals, so this one struck a chord, so to speak, with me. I definitely recommend this one, as well as Soul Music, for music lovers.

Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg are like the Laurel and Hardy of the Discworld Witches. I found myself rooting for Agnes - excuse me, Perdita - and finding Christine to be an annoying little ninny. (And the subplot about Nanny Ogg's The Joye of Snacks is well worth the price of admission.)

A beautiful but bittersweet book. I wonder if, in writing the passing of Granny Weatherwax, Pratchett was reflecting on his own forthcoming departure for another sphere. Plenty of wit and humor, and Stephen Briggs is the best narrator that Discworld could ask for.

These two books are some of my favorite Poirot novels. I'd encountered The ABC Murders first, and it was fascinating to follow all the twists and turns of the story down to the end. And Hugh Fraser, once again, delivers a fine performance with both books.

Good assortment of Poirot tales

I've read several of the full-length Poirot novels, but not many of the short stories - and since these stories made up most of the early episodes of the Poirot TV show, I decided to check them out.

It's a good assortment of stories. Some held my interest more than others. Jewel Robbery at the Grand Metropolitan and The Chocolate Box were fun, and The Labours of Hercules cycle was quite clever.

Of the narrators, I'd have to say Hugh Fraser did the best job - I've listened to him on quite a few other Poirot audiobooks, and he does an amazing job with accents and intonation. David Suchet, I think, comes in at second - though it's so strange hearing him speak in his own voice rather than Poirot's. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I didn't really care for which narrator did Murder in the Mews - it was kind of grating on the ears and staccato-y.

(Incidentally, another reviewer posted a list of the stories with their assigned narrators. I think that list might be a little inaccurate. For example, some of the stories that were listed under David Suchet or Nigel Hawthorne were definitely read by Hugh Fraser.)

Another gripping drama from AC

Agatha Christie definitely had a thing for murders committed aboard modes of transportation - especially trains. While not quite up there with Murder on the Orient Express, the Mystery of the Blue Train has all the elements of a really gripping story: a murdered heiress, missing jewels, an overnight train trip to an exotic destination, and quite a few people who are hiding a secret.

Readers and listeners will doubtless recognize Hugh Fraser from his role as Captain Hastings alongside David Suchet's Poirot. Fraser does a superb job as narrator for this story, with a great talent for doing a variety of different accents and voices - which is no mean feat, considering how many characters with dialogue there are in the book.

Fascinating steampunk story

I do love a good steampunk story, and Amethyst has all the makings of a good heroine. She's on well-trod ground, of the intrepid young lady scientist, but the story finds ways to explore this theme and make it into something new and exciting.

Jennifer Smith does a good job as the narrator. My one concern is that her narrator's voice sounds rather breathy and high-pitched, almost a bit childlike. Depending on the listener, this might end up being a tad grating on the ears after a bit, but I wouldn't call this a make-or-break issue.

I think I'll have to check other books in the series out.

No shortage of perfect stories in this book

This book is so much fun. It's definitely a behind-the-scenes look at the Princess Bride, but it's also a memoir - and I guess, sort of a quest story, too. Cary's filled the book with so many amazing stories, both from when the filming was actually taking place, and also of the fan base the film has built up over the years. (Pope John Paul II was a fan - who knew?)

The stories run the gamut from exciting, to laugh-out-loud, to poignant. There's a particularly bittersweet moment near the end of the book in which Cary talks about sitting at his dying grandfather's bedside in the hospital, and reflecting on how similar that moment is to the grandfather-grandson scenes in the movie.

Cary does the lion's share of the narration, and he does it so well - I mean, it's Westley himself telling the story. But the other principal cast and crew members also jump in to share their own memories, which makes the book even more special.

As a final note, I got to meet Cary after a Princess Bride screening in NYC this past November. And let me just say that in addition to being a fine actor and raconteur, he is also an extremely nice guy - a prince.
