Huge Disappointment!

As a serious fan of the Novice series, I had high hopes for The Chosen. What a disappointment! The plot was an amalgam of all YA tropes: bullying in boys' reform school, abusive or ineffectual adults, survival against monsters, girls who are stronger than boys, and weapons training montage. The dialogue was uninspired and the characters were one-dimensional. Add to all of these flaws the frequent use of god-d***, a**, sh** and I would not recommend this book to ANYONE... and I'm a librarian!

Excessive use of f***

Although creative in many aspects, frequent uses of f**k ruin the affect. The protagonist uses f*** when she is upset and as a verb to describe sex. The excessive references to sex and the very violent scenes make this book unbalanced. I love how the character wants to work for her financial independence, manage her finances, and use her skills to make a place for herself. The writing is otherwise pretty compelling. I just cannot get over how often the author relies on expletives to convey meaning, including when there is no strong emotion (any time the character thinks about sex, the f*** word is used instead). This is not for fans of Cold Burn of Magic.

Shannon Messenger is brilliant and the series is amazing. That said, I found the extensive torture sequence disturbing. The book also spent way more time on disgusting details (the smell/texture of Sophie's medications).
