Historia
This is the tale of Demon Copperhead: our hero. A boy with no assets beyond his dead father's good looks and copper-coloured hair, bucket-loads of charm and a talent or two the world is yet to discover. Born to a teenaged single mother in a single wide trailer, life is not set fair for Demon as he escorts us on this, his journey through the modern perils of foster care, athletic success and addiction, the dizzying highs of true love, and the crushing losses that can accompany it.

Historia
In Chernobyl, following the nuclear disaster, only a handful of people returned to their dangerously irradiated homes. On an uninhabited Scottish island, feral cattle live entirely wild. In Detroit, once America’s fourth-largest city, entire streets of houses are falling in on themselves, looters slipping through otherwise silent neighbourhoods. This book explores the extraordinary places where humans no longer live—or survive in tiny, precarious numbers—to give us a possible glimpse of what happens when mankind’s impact on nature is forced to stop.

Cal is really great at setting the scene, and I love where it goes. As a Scot I also really appreciated hearing about Scottish abandoned places, and hearing it read by a fellow Scot (the author, of course). Recommended.

Historia
In 1889, thousands of hopeful people raced southward from the Kansas state line and westward from the Arkansas boundary to stake claims on the thousands of acres of unclaimed pastures and meadows. Across the 20th century, water was dammed and drained in Holland so that a new province, Flevoland, rose up, unchartered and requiring new thinking. In 1850, California legislated the theft of land from Native Americans. An apology came in 2019 from the governor, but what of the call for reparations or return?

Thoughtful, engaging book that made me think

I’d read Exactly by the same author and that made me want to hear more of him. Not disappointed! Lots of history, well told and with personal stories — not dry at all. I like that it gives a voice to the dispossessed and sheds light on injustice. Good read/listen.

Historia
On a warm July evening in 1985, a middle-aged man stood on the pavement of a busy avenue in the heart of Moscow, holding a plastic carrier bag. In his grey suit and tie, he looked like any other Soviet citizen. The bag alone was mildly conspicuous, printed with the red logo of Safeway, the British supermarket.

Completely compelling, all the more so for being an account of real events. I don't always enjoy an author reading their own work, but this is perfect. Bravo.

Historia
In 1974 in Kinshasa, Zaïre, two African American boxers were paid five million dollars apiece to fight each other. One was Muhammad Ali, the aging but irrepressible "professor of boxing." The other was George Foreman, who was as taciturn as Ali was voluble. Observing them was Norman Mailer, a commentator of unparalleled energy, acumen, and audacity.

I enjoyed the heck out of this audiobook
Revisado: 04-13-20
Here is one of the best writers of his generation writing about the best fighter of that time. The book is read by the best and most aptly chosen narrator I remember hearing. The book is of course dated in some of its language and cultural assumptions, being both sexist and racist as context demands. Nevertheless: what a book, even if you're not all that into boxing. I'm not sure they write them like this anymore. I had so much fun.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author China Mieville delivers his most accomplished novel yet, an existential thriller set in a city unlike any other, real or imagined. When a murdered woman is found in the city of Beszel, somewhere at the edge of Europe, it looks to be a routine case for Inspector Tyador Borlof the Extreme Crime Squad. But as he investigates, the evidence points to conspiracies far stranger and more deadly than anything he could have imagined.

Terrific story, great concept, some flaws
Revisado: 02-27-20
The central conceit of this novel is brilliant: two cities that are one city. Miéville paints a completely believable picture of how the cities coexist. Details are vivid, and there are wonderful turns of phrase now and again. It's a rich world to be immersed in.
I'm less convinced by the dialogue, which errs on the side of melodrama, and which is heavily expositional: I would much prefer to find out what is happening by figuring it out myself than by one of the characters explaining to another character what just happened and why. I would also have liked a less 'actorly' reading (the narrator is otherwise excellent) when the text itself is already a bit overwrought with so much emoting and exclamation.
Very good book that I will recommend, but you have to not mind about the things mentioned above if you want to get the most out of it.

Historia
When Desert Solitaire was first published in 1968, it became the focus of a nationwide cult. Rude and sensitive. Thought-provoking and mystical. Angry and loving. Both Abbey and this book are all of these and more. Here, the legendary author of The Monkey Wrench Gang, Abbey's Road and many other critically acclaimed books vividly captures the essence of his life during three seasons as a park ranger in southeastern Utah.

Charming and fascinating, well read
Revisado: 10-01-19
What a lovely book. Although you can tell that it was written in the late 60s (or early 70s?) with some of the preoccupations and attitudes of the time, most of it is still completely fresh. The descriptions of desert life are beautifully realised: you are transported there. The narrative is often witty and wry; I love the author’s turn of phrase. The narrator is perfect. I would come back to this again as a familiar comfort-read, somewhere to vacation from the world.

Real Spanish for Real Spanish Speaking Situations
- De Tom en 02-05-14
Uneven pacing and inflexible
Revisado: 09-18-19
This book spends a lot of time (too much time) on really basic phrases, but then jumps into quite complex dialog that might, maybe, meet your needs. I want it to explain that “ir” means “to go” and the explain how “I go, you go, she goes” are different. The book doesn’t explain any grammar, so you are left with a series of phrases that might or might not work in your situation. Disappointed; yes I want to converse, but I need to know how to adapt the language to what I want to say. Needs to be clearer about the lack of grammar before you buy.
