Historia
The 1930s was a magical age in Hollywood, with Shirley Temple and Mickey Rooney, Bette Davis, and Clark Gable lighting up the silver screen. But Deanna Durbin’s fame surpassed them all. Born in Canada, Deanna was “discovered” by star-maker Eddie Cantor, producer Joe Pasternak, and director Henry Koster, and she quickly became the world’s most celebrated star. She saved Universal Studios from ruin, she was a favorite of Winston Churchill and Anne Frank, and she became the highest-paid woman in America.

The wonderful fabulous Deanna Durbin and oh yeah and that fat kid Judy
Revisado: 06-01-23
Melanie, girl you triiied it! Lol
This could have been a great book to show love and appreciation for two ladies who started out together and went on to have great careers of their own. The author’s constant passive aggressive digs at Judy do not sit well with this Judy Garland fan. It was so unnecessary and most of her comments were not true. It’s obvious the book was only greenlit because of Judy (obvious because of the authors obvious bias towards Deanna), which shows Judy’s enduring legend. Judy had countless enduring memorable screen performances and a legendary vocal career, Deanna not so much (I loved her in “Three smart girls”. Since most readers are more acquainted with Garland this book could have been a great opportunity to introduce Durbin to a new audience but the shabby way the author treats Judy does not inspire me to do so. Exploited in life and further exploited in death…
I wish the author could have just written her book about Deanna and keep Judy out if it, especially if she was just going to disrespect her and use her to uplift Deanna
* the narrator was okay but not memorable.

Historia
By 22 years old, Aaliyah had already accomplished a staggering amount: hit records, acclaimed acting roles, and fame that was just about to cross over into superstardom. Like her song, she was already “more than a woman” but her shocking death in a plane crash prevented her from fully growing into one.

Offers no real insight
Revisado: 08-20-21
I was so excited when I heard there was going to be a new biography on the life of the legendary Aaliyah and I so looked forward to reading this book. Despite Aaliyah’s family not participating nor any close friends the book promised to be a telling account of the all too short life of Aaliyah. Sadly the reader doesn’t get much insight into who Aaliyah was and how she felt abt the things she endured, achieved and overcame. The book is basically a copy plaster job of everything we already know abt her.
I’m hoping someday Aaliyah’s family will have the strength to tell her story because it certainly deserves to be told by them.

Historia
Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye: The Barbara Payton Story is the only family-authorized biography of the late Hollywood actress whose promising film career in the 1950s was quickly overtaken by a disastrous and scandal-ridden personal life that left her career in ashes. Barbara Payton’s story has long been considered one of the saddest and most potent cautionary tales the town has ever known.

Raw emotional and unforgettable
Revisado: 08-25-19
Although I feel that a woman should have narrated this story it was still very good. The author maps out Barbara's life but I still have a lot of questions. Self destruction at this level is clearly sign of something deeper going on and yet no one in this woman's life sought to have her mentally evaluated and committed. Even after this woman survived a stabbing she would return to her family looking worse and worse and no one intervened to get her much needed help. I truly feel that Barbara turning over her journals to her sil where she detailed her self loathing and longing for her father's love was a cry for help and no one heeded it.
Her demise was such a preventable waste
Anyway I hope the poor woman is finally at peace.

Historia
> Joi Lansing: A Body to Die For, colorfully chronicles personal and intimate details of the last four years of the talented '50's blonde bombshell star's fascinating life. After three decades of successful TV and movie appearances and Vegas singing stardom, Ms. Lansing died far too young at just 43. Though her funeral was attended by luminaries of the day, (Frank Sinatra sent a huge floral display), her light went out relatively unceremoniously.

It's okay
Revisado: 09-01-17
It's okay.
What could have been a touching highly effective read is mostly a superficial book based on anecdotes and endless chapters about different restaurants and the foods they served.
I would love to read a more balanced/serious biography about actress Joi Lansing. For some reason the relationship between Joi and Alexis doesn't strike me as real, Alexis basically comes off as a young obsessed fan instead of a real life lover. Also I have a hard time believing that Joi's ex husband who was such a factor in her life could be that naive not to see the "closeness" between Joi and Alexis.
The age difference between the two ladies and the fact that Alexis basically turned over life and career aspirations to Joi and wasn't earning a salary also struck me as wrong somehow. Joi basically kept the young lady around as a lover/friend/assistant and the fact that Alexis makes comments about not having enough money to buy etc doesn't put Joi in the best light. I wonder if she at least left Alexis a few dollars after her death?
Now onto the narrator. Probably the worst narrator I've ever listened to. She speaks in this really annoying condescending Kim Kardashian voice and some passages I almost felt embarrassed for as she seemed to be making fun of the story and the characters. The voice she uses for Joi makes her seem extremely shallow and borderline retarded. I will never listen to anything read by her again.
All in all it's an okay story but could have been extremely touching, educating and important.
All the ingredients were there.

By 1920, the movies had suddenly become America's new favorite pastime and one of the nation's largest industries. Never before had a medium possessed such power to influence; yet Hollywood's glittering ascendancy was threatened by a string of headline-grabbing tragedies - including the murder of William Desmond Taylor, the popular president of the Motion Picture Directors Association, a legendary crime that has remained unsolved until now.

Historia
This fresh look at Hollywood's "Queen of Screwball," Carole Lombard, presents a first-ever examination of the events that led to the shocking flight mishap that took her life on the side of a Nevada mountain in 1942. It also provides a day-by-day account of the struggles of Lombard's husband, Clark Gable, and other family, friends, and fans to cope with the tragedy. In effect, having just completed the first sale of war bonds and stamps in the nation following its entry into World War II, Lombard became the first Hollywood star to sacrifice her life in the war.

Heartbreaking story with obnoxious narrator
Revisado: 03-13-17
This was probably the most beautifully written tragic story I've ever read. I think it would have fared even better with a better Narrator. Tavia what's her face is no Grace Conlin and her over the top dramatic recitation bordered on obnoxious "oooh no! Dear! sweet! Carole is... G-g-g-ONE!!" (Rolls eyes) the story was tragic enough and did not need Tavia's over the top Mary Pickford style of acting.
Anyway I wish I had read the book on my own because I don't think I will be able to revisit this title. It was just too heartbreaking, those people did not deserve to die in such a tragic way. Oh well I pray they are all at peace.
Off to find something cheery to read to...

When Vanessa Williams was growing up, she had a plan: She'd go to college and major in musical theater; afterward she'd get her MFA from the Yale School of Drama, and then she would embark on a successful career on Broadway. But her life took a detour and she wound up the first black Miss America in September 1983 (an accomplishment that she never planned for or desired), only to be forced to resign ten months later due to a nude photo scandal - much to the shock of her mother, Helen, who had told her, "never pose nude for anyone."
