Historia
On holiday in Cornwall, the three children discover an ancient map in the attic of the house that they are staying in. They know immediately that it is special. It is even more than that - the key to finding a grail, a source of power to fight the forces of evil known as the Dark. And in searching for it themselves, the Drews put their lives in peril.

Fun Young Adult Addition to the Arturian Legend
Revisado: 01-14-21
This was an enjoyable tale, told with attention to characters and plot, and the performance was terrific. This was directed toward a pre-adult audience, with detail and plot turns enough for grownups to enjoy. The descriptions of the people and settings were first-rate. There were enough welk-told action scenes to move the plot along. I recommend this for anyone.

Sweeping Storyline, Sweeping Characters
Revisado: 11-17-17
Enjoyed the arching historical setting, and the well crafted characters. Life in southern coal mines is rarely addressed and its small(ish) part of the story was fascinating. I was sad to hear this book come to an end.

The Total Package
Revisado: 06-16-17
Where does The Power of One rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This book is one of my favorites so far. The characterizations were rich and complete and I am pretty certain they will remain with me for some time.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Power of One?
Two Words... Black Mamba
Have you listened to any of Humphrey Bower’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Humphrey Bower has one of the best voices. His pace is perfect and always fits the moment.
Any additional comments?
Bryce Courtenay is a true story teller. Some of the events were just a little too coincidental to be believable, but they were woven so very well. It was easy to say "oh, ok," rather than "yeah right." His descriptions paint the most vivid pictures in my head and Humphrey Bower's reading brought them to life.

Terrific Story/Fascinating History
Revisado: 12-09-16
US colonial history is a favorite for me and this did not disappoint. The history was tucked into a well written story with great characterizations. The minor deviations from actual history are excusable. I didn't initially enjoy the narrator, but I got used to her.

East Sussex, 1914. It is the end of England's brief Edwardian summer, and everyone agrees that the weather has never been so beautiful. Hugh Grange, down from his medical studies, is visiting his aunt Agatha, who lives with her husband in the small, idyllic coastal town of Rye. Agatha's husband works in the Foreign Office, and she is certain he will ensure that the recent saber rattling over the Balkans won't come to anything.

Delightful Edwardian Tale
Revisado: 08-25-16
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not all of the characters were developed as deeply as I would have liked, but they were all interesting and believable. It was not hard to put myself in Beatrice's shoes as she became an integral part of her new community. The narrator struggled with some of the male voices, but overall acted them well and was a pleasure to listen to. If you enjoyed Downton Abbey, you will likely enjoy this story.

Historia
It is the spring of 1802, and the village of Paradise is still reeling from the typhoid epidemic of the previous summer. Elizabeth and Nathaniel Bonner have lost their two-year-old son, Hannah’s half brother Robbie, but they struggle on as always: the men in the forests, the twins Lily and Daniel in Elizabeth’s school, and Hannah as a doctor in training, apprenticed to Richard Todd. Hannah is descended from healers on both sides - one Scots grandmother and one Mohawk - and her reputation as a skilled healer in her own right is growing.

The story is ok, the history is good. The narrator is adequate. She enunciates clearly, but isn't a voice actor. Her reading is like a really accomplished teacher's style.
