Historia
Fallen Angel is a documentary podcast about Victoria's Secret...and its many, many secrets. The series investigates the origin story of one of the world’s most iconic brands and its effect on American culture for nearly 40 years, all told by women who witnessed what really happened behind the curtain. Fallen Angel goes back to the beginning of the lingerie megabrand to confront the many ways the brand influenced how a generation of women think about sex, desire, and beauty. The series also explores Les Wexner, the private man who has been at the head of the company for over 35 years, and his...

Could have been great
Revisado: 02-16-22
There’s a lot here that could have been great, but this podcast is kind of all over the place and lacks a true through line or focus. I found the episode about the rise of more inclusive lingerie brands the most interesting, but even that got bogged down in other nonsense. They interview great experts - a VS Angel, Cora Harrington, Jenna Lyons - but even those interviews felt disjointed and not substantial. I was particularly disturbed by the unfounded allegations about the VS CEO having an affair with Jeffrey Epstein - they kept coming back to this supposed gay relationship (to explain…something?) without any proof. That felt gross.

Historia
One reporter takes an immersive dive into white supremacy's explosive online presence, exploring the undercurrents of propaganda, racism, misogyny, and history that led us to where we are now. Shocking, humorous, and merciless in equal measure, Culture Warlords explores some of the vilest subcultures on the web - and shows us how we can fight back.

Great potential poorly executed
Revisado: 06-01-21
I heard the author interviewed on Sam Sanders’ NPR podcast and was intrigued. The book had great potential and is really well done when she focuses on her time catfishing white supremacists. Unfortunately, those interactions receive less focus than I was expecting. The author has a nice voice for narration but there were substantial issues with the audiobook production - the audio dipping in volume or clarity, times when the reader clearly turns her head away and is harder to hear - that took away from the listening experience.
