Historia
Peter is a Dublin lawyer in his thirties—successful, competent, and apparently unassailable. But in the wake of their father’s death, he’s medicating himself to sleep and struggling to manage his relationships with two very different women—his enduring first love, Sylvia, and Naomi, a college student for whom life is one long joke. Ivan is a twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player. He has always seen himself as socially awkward, a loner, the antithesis of his glib elder brother. Now, in the early weeks of his bereavement, Ivan meets Margaret.

Historia
This epic work tells the story of the Hemingses, whose close blood ties to our third president had been systematically expunged from American history until very recently. Now, historian and legal scholar Annette Gordon-Reed traces the Hemings family from its origins in Virginia in the 1700s to the family's dispersal after Jefferson's death in 1826. It brings to life not only Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson but also their children and Hemings's siblings, who shared a father with Jefferson's wife, Martha.

In Vibrant Matter, the political theorist Jane Bennett, renowned for her work on nature, ethics, and affect, shifts her focus from the human experience of things to things themselves. Bennett argues that political theory needs to do a better job of recognizing the active participation of nonhuman forces in events.

I love this account of an alternative way of seeing life and agency. I have long felt that the nature-culture dichotomy is false and agree with Bennet’s characterizations of life, agency and connectedness in all things, even matter. This book is part history, part science and part philosophy - and if you really take it in, it will make your world sparkle with life.

Jane Bennett, renowned for her work on nature, ethics, and affect, shifts her focus from the human experience of things to things themselves. Bennett argues that political theory needs to do a better job of recognizing the active participation of nonhuman forces in events. Toward that end, she theorizes a “vital materiality” that runs through and across bodies, both human and nonhuman. She suggests that recognizing that agency is distributed this way, and is not solely the province of humans, might spur the cultivation of a more responsible, ecologically sound politics

Although each instance of creativity is singular and specific, Kyna Leski tells us, the creative process is universal. Artists, architects, poets, inventors, scientists, and others all navigate the same stages of the process in order to discover something that does not yet exist. All of us must work our way through the empty page, the blank screen, writer's block, confusion, chaos, and doubt.

Excellent book on creativity and the artistic process
Revisado: 06-08-23
It’s silly that the rating on this book is so low - the narrator is not the best but by no means is it unlistenable. And the book itself is wonderful, especially if you are a creative of any type. It changed the way I approached my creative process and the way I think about creativity in general. Highly recommend.

insulting mispronunciation
- De Laura Libman en 10-10-23
Awful narrator. Shocking mispronunciation.
Revisado: 05-27-23
The information in this broad overview of Mexican history is, overall, good and informative. I was shocked and appalled at the terrible, repeated mispronunciation of Spanish and Nahuatl / Maya words throughout. Frankly, it feels a bit dated and out of touch to have a British narrator for this, but at the very least they could have found someone who can pronounce the many many Mexican / Spanish names and words correctly out of respect for the culture. There were also several condescending moments that continue to normalize the Eurocentric view of the world. Disappointing, but better than nothing.

Historia
Centuries ago, Spanish conquistadors searching for gold and new lands encountered a group of independent city-states in Mesoamerica. Sophisticated beyond the Spaniards' wildest imaginings, these people were the Aztecs, the Maya, and related cultures that shared common traditions of religion, government, the arts, engineering, and trade. In many ways more advanced than European nations, these societies equaled the world's greatest civilizations of their time.

Wonderful and comprehensive
Revisado: 05-17-23
This course was extreme engaging, well-researched and comprehensive. It includes ancient and modern connections, archeology and ethnography. I left with a wonderful beginning / survey-style understanding of the ongoing research and evolving discoveries in Mesoamerican history and archeology. It left me wanting more!
