This was the first time I have read a book by this author and thoroughly enjoyed it. The narrator is excellent. I recommend this book for a rainy weekend when you’re searching for entertainment that will calm your mind.

I now have read all the books in this series and have grown to love this family: its love, empathy and devotion to each other. We get to know Finnbar as a small boy which will give us more insight into his character in a later book as a teenager. I wish the story had been longer and had let us know Ian and Biddy better. We get to know the brother Patrick, perhaps more than we know about Ian. Although there will be a later book on Patrick after he has been off to fight as a Union soldier, I wish Ms. Eden would write a book featuring Patrick and the historical setting of the Civil War. What was the extended O’Connor family feeling as two of the brothers were away fighting in the war? A book on Joseph Archer, his Baltimore days and what led him to Wyoming would be most interesting as well. Although this is a good book, I didn’t find it as interesting as the other books in the series,

A love letter between mother and son, And in this case, the mother told us in her own words what the “poor little rich girl” of historical headlines was feeling.

I listened to this story in one day. I just had to know the ending of this love story. A plus for me were the descriptions of the beauty of Douglas Lake and Douglas Dam in the shadows of the Great Smoky Mountains, my area of Tennessee. Highly recommend, especially for those who loved “The Notebook”.

Boo Walker has written a book filled with wisdom, although some readers may not have had the life experiences to appreciate it. This book is about the power of love and forgiveness to bring renewal and new life visions. If a reader has not lived 75 years, he or she may not be attuned to how it is possible for Mrs. C to have lost the will to live and how the love and energy of her former student brings new vigor and sense of purpose to her even as his care for her is at the same time bringing new life to him. Likewise, some may fail to appreciate the role forgiveness plays in making the narrator and his family whole again.

I enjoyed the book and the narration very much.

Home Front educates on the PTSD suffered by so many of our veterans. For that reason I would recommend it to others. What I didn’t like were the bratty daughters. Really? If Jolene was so intent on being the perfect mother, she should have had a clue that her daughters were abnormally obnoxious. Or perhaps Jolene had no idea what was “normal” because she herself had not grown up in a normal family? The author does not explore that. The father did a much better job of parenting when he had to step up after Jolene’s deployment. As others have mentioned, I did not like the narrator. Her voices for the daughters made them even more obnoxious.

I found this book to be a good read for relaxing. I just wish that more was written about John and Lauren. I also would have liked to know more about how her biography of John’s father turned out. I had to adjust the speed of the narration. Then I could hear the authentic cadence of a Western North Carolina accent. All in all, once I got past a few chapters, the book drew me in, and I enjoyed it,

Ms. Richardson manages to engross her readers in the story while educating them about several historical details: the “Blue People of Kentucky” and their rare genetic disorder; the WPA Packhorse Project; how impoverished Appalachians were willing to work in dangerous mining operations; and how strong, courageous women fought dehumanizing treatment in a patriarchal social system.

Ms. Schorr’s narration is excellent. Although I am not from Kentucky, I know the Appalachian dialect as I was born and grew up in East Tennessee. Ms. Schorr’s voice transports the reader to Eastern Kentucky and makes the words of Ms. Richardson come alive.

This is a story of reconciliation. It could have been an excellent story. I could not get past the rudeness and snarkiness in the voices of the sister and her daughter. Really, is this now what is considered the usual and acceptable way an 11-year-old talks to adults? Granted, the story called for the anger which had smoldered over years to be expressed. I just couldn’t like the characters and how they expressed themselves.
