I loved that this was not the same old cookie cutter plot. Each character was developed to the point you felt you knew and understood them all. Good, clean story line. I will be looking for other titles by Laura Barrow!

Stupendous work
Revisado: 03-10-23
I learned of this author not long ago from a friend and and I’m so glad I did. Leila Meachum captivated not only the history of the era, but the story line, the characters, etc. Every description, every character came to life in both this book and Somerset. I read Somerset first. You laugh, you cry and you are happy right along with the people in this book. Life was harsh during those times. Coleen Marlo narrated like she felt every word and every chapter. When the book ends, you feel like you are turning loose old friends.

Historia
From the 1920s to 1950, Georgia Tann ran a black-market baby business at the Tennessee Children’s Home Society in Memphis. The publication of Lisa Wingate’s novel Before We Were Yours brought new awareness of Tann’s lucrative career in child trafficking. Adoptees who knew little about their pasts gained insight into the startling facts behind their family histories. Encouraged by their contact with Wingate and award-winning journalist Judy Christie, who documented the stories of 15 adoptees in this book, many determined Tann survivors set out to trace their roots.

Heartbreaking and heartwarming
Revisado: 09-27-22
While I’m stilled appalled that so many people had to know what Georgia Tann was doing all those years and turned a blind eye, I am grateful that Lisa Wingate and Judy Christie and all the others involved got this reunion together to help these families deal with the aftermath of what had happened to them so long ago. Having lived in Memphis and the surrounding area for about 6 years (about 15 years ago) the landmarks mentioned were like a walk down memory lane. Before We were Yours touched me and it was just wonderful to hear how y’all have followed up with these families. How many authors do that? If there is another follow-up book, I will be in line to get my copy!

Listen to the author interview first
Revisado: 09-23-22
Mr. Krueger does an excellent job of making you see the town, the countryside and every character so plainly you feel you are walking right beside them. It is the kind of book that leave you in a contemplative frame of mind. The narration was perfect. When you get half-way or 2/3s of the way through, you may wonder why you picked this book. But hang in there, it is worth the read. And when you listen to the author’s interview again after you read the book, you will know Mr. Krueger accomplished his goals in writing this book. You will be reminded that no matter what problems come your way, we need to be more thankful to God for the abundance of His “Ordinary Grace” that is bestowed upon us daily.

I love historical fiction.
Revisado: 09-16-22
This era of history sounds so similar to our current world. I applaud authors who bring to life the historical truths while wrapping such a gripping story line in and around what was really going on in that point in time. The characters were real, the plot kept me spellbound with its twists and sometimes unexpected turns. The narration was superb! I’ll be looking for more books by Marius Gabriel.

Great historical fiction
Revisado: 09-13-22
A story that brings to life a part of Canadian history that I did not know existed. It appears to me that in part, it is a shameful part of history. It seems that those farm families who bought these children just saw an opportunity to obtain cheap slaves. How they could bring a child in and nearly starve them and put them in the barn or a shed to sleep is unfathomable. I do think Genevieve Graham did a great job of telling the home children’s story. To learn from history, we must teach it to our young people. I am glad that Canada is putting up monuments and having days of remembrance. These children have contributed a lot to Canada. Thanks for bringing their story to light.

Easy to listen to. Easy to get to know and fall in love with each character. Descriptive enough that you feel like you are one of “them”. I not exactly sure how the author did it, but this book is better than and cheaper than therapy. You feel what Ava’s feeling so deeply, that it causes you to do some soul searching yourself. I love that through it all, Ava recognizes what Jack Mack has gone through, too. And she owns her part in putting him through it. ( I’m sick of all these weak men in books and movies!) Yes, we can have strong women AND strong men in a relationship. Loved the book and loved your narration.

Absolutely captivating
Revisado: 08-08-22
Eve Haas was a brilliant author. Recently I listened to another Audible book about a family’s story through two generations-parents and their daughters. It was was impossible to keep everyone straight.
Even though I was not familiar with Prussian history, Mrs Haas developed every character and every scene where I felt like I was there and her family was my family. And this book spanned hundreds of years. I wish I could thank Eve Haas personally for bringing these parts of history to life. I don’t want to give anything away, but I especially liked the comparisons made at the end of the book. I don’t usually read the same book twice, but this will be one I read again, soon. What could have been a book that was full of dry dates, names and places was not. Her husband, Ken, deserves credit for his unwavering presence by her side, along with the support of her sons. The narrator was so gifted. I feel like I gained even more listening to the book rather than just reading it! I highly recommend that you read this sometimes heartbreaking, but beautiful story. You won’t regret it!!

Interesting story
Revisado: 07-25-22
Enjoyed the story. Narration was fantastic. Did I miss something? Is there a sequel or a prequel? What was Hannah’s story? I did find it a bit unbelievable that Hannah knew so much about the farm, knew all the people in the community and felt so “at home” there when she had only spent one week there when she was younger. I know they kept in touch, but couldn’t believe she had never mentioned her friendship or anything about Oklahoma to her relatives. I have read many of Carolyn Brown’s books. I still like her stories. I just need a little more info to really “get” this one.

Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.

Didn’t want the story to end
Revisado: 06-20-22
Absolutely one of the best books I have read. However, the narrator made the book 10 times better! Not that it would have not been fantastic if I had read it myself. Every character’s voice, every scene in the book was just portrayed perfectly. You will probably shed a few tears, you may want to give a few folks a piece of your mind, but you will also burst out in laughter! You feel like you are sitting in the middle of every scene and that you too, are making new friends along the way!
