Very poorly written and cliche-filled.

There is no character development at all. The manufactured “romantic tension” between the local detective and the visiting inspector is non-existent, try tho’ the author might. This main character local detective has no personality at all. He’s tall and handsome with “chiseled features” but there’s no there there. I gave this series two books’ worth of my attention. Not worth it. Moving on. (Also, the books need an editor and a proofreader!)

Historia
Judith Potts is 77 years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local vicar.

Judith is a wonderful protagonist. And the house by the river - what a dream! Love that the river features heavily in actions, descriptions, etc. Cops (esp. Tanika) need further development. Nicolette Mackenzie (sp?) is a wonderful reader. Overall, enjoyable.

Not much detecting…
Revisado: 07-05-24
It’s a bit of a mess of a book. The protagonist, Manon, seems at the beginning of the book to be a smart, tough, renegade detective who neglects her personal life for the sake of the case. Fairly typical detective fare. But the character and the story quickly descend into an overwrought, emotional quagmire. Manon walks around with horrible conjunctivitis b/c she forgets to buy drops, cries almost constantly, drinks to excess and acts badly. Then cries some more. A lot of crying. She desperately wants a boyfriend. This just doesn’t jibe with the tough-smart-detective genre. Part of the problem may be the changing narrators for each chapter. This adds nothing to the story and actually mucks it up and slows it down. The ending of the mystery is a let down but the epilogue of sorts is rather sweet.

Historia
In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his estranged father’s funeral takes place. On the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family, too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death. The case calls Matthew back to the people and places of his past, as deadly secrets hidden at their hearts are revealed.

Underwhelming - skip it!
Revisado: 02-19-24
I’m a big fan of both the Vera and Shetland series. (I will say the ‘films’ are better than the books but the books hold up.) This new series is just dull, flavorless, and suspense-less. The main character detective seems uniquely free of personality and intelligence. And then it ends absurdly abruptly. Just not good at all.

Tapper should not read his own novels. Get an actor! It greatly affects the experience.
