Light and meaningful at the same time
Revisado: 07-29-20
This story was not what I expected, but I enjoyed it. It was mainly a light, sometimes funny, read. It worked in some good lessons without getting preachy.

Unique and enjoyable story
Revisado: 05-27-20
I really enjoyed this story. The plot was unique with the perfect combination of predictability and surprise twists. Overall the performance was great but a couple times it was difficult to tell who was supposed to be talking based on the narrator's voices.

Engaging story with enough surprises
Revisado: 07-24-19
I was recommended this book as a great read for a long drive, and it did not disappoint. Just enough suspense and interesting characters. The story ends with things mainly resolved but definitely some loose ties where you are left to imagine what happens next.

Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is 77 years old and crazy, standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-men-who-want-to-talk-about-Jesus crazy. She is also Elsa's best and only friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother's stories, in the Land of Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.

Historia
Jeanne Wakatsuki was seven years old in 1942 when her family was uprooted from their home and sent to live at Manzanar internment camp - with 10,000 other Japanese Americans. Along with searchlight towers and armed guards, Manzanar ludicrously featured cheerleaders, Boy Scouts, sock hops, baton-twirling lessons, and a dance band called the Jive Bombers who would play any popular song except the nation's number-one hit: "Don't Fence Me In".
Farewell to Manzanar is the true story of one spirited Japanese-American family's attempt to survive the indignities of forced detention.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Superb telling of a thoughtful story

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but I am do glad I read it. The characters are complex and the way the author draws on his personal experience to create a fictional character brings authenticity to the characters in the story.
