Historia
It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low.

A weaker story than the earlier Hunger Games books
Revisado: 04-08-25
This was pretty good, but didn't have the same frenetic action of the earlier books. The overall story was good, but the ending was a "thumbs down." The portrayal of Snow was two-dimensional and didn't do much more than confirm that he was a horrible person his whole life. Listening to this book didn't give me any added benefit or understanding of the Hunger Games characters or universe. Before I read this, I kinda planned to get "Sunrise on the Reaping" next, but now I'm thinking I'll wait for it to go on sale.

The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

This was a winner from Alanson. The story was a good addition to Expeditionary Force. Some of the books before this were getting a little weak, but this one got back on track and kept me interested and wanting more.

Historia
The adventuring industry drives the economy of Arth, a world much like our own but with more magic and fewer vowels. Monsters' hoards are claimed, bought by corporate interests, and sold off to plunder funds long before the Heroes' Guild actually kills the beasts. Of course, that's a terrible arrangement for the Shadowkin; orcs, goblins, kobolds, and their ilk must apply for to become Noncombatant Paper Carriers (or NPCs) to avoid being killed and looted by heroes.

Not hilarious as promised, but a very good story
Revisado: 03-27-25
The reviews I read were like: and hilarity followed, lol, and such. It had some "tongue in cheek" humor and was an excellent story, but I may have chuckled once or twice during the whole listen. The universe of "The Dark Profit Saga" is irreverent, a bit cynical, and spoof'ish which is humorous in a cerebral way, but just not laugh out loud or a fit of laughter that can't be controlled way. The characters were very good, the storyline kept my attention, and the pace of the story was very good. If you are looking at this book in hopes of uncontrollable laughter, keep looking. If you are looking for a decent litRPG adjacent fantasy story, this is a very good one. My final rating is either 1) I'm done with this series, 2) I'll look for the next book on a free service if I have time, or 3) I'm buying the next book now. For this series, I'll give it a "I'm buying the next book now" rating, FWIW.

Overall a good Piers Anthony story, but...
Revisado: 03-23-25
While the story was good and as with every Piers Anthony story, it was well told, well thought out, and interesting, it isn't a series that I will continue. I just didn't find the interest in this story and these characters that would draw me into the series.

Almost made me want to quit the series
Revisado: 03-20-25
This book was pretty bad. I'd say 40% of it was worth reading. The author went into depth about the character building and world building methods for this universe. If you are into that kind of thing, you may enjoy this, but I am not into this kind of thing nor did I enjoy this book. The previous books were pretty good with the author dipping into tedious detail about the gaming system occasionally. I have book 10 in my library, so I'll listen to it, but if it's as bad as this, I'll move on to something else.

The ninth floor. Nine armies, each led by rich and powerful aliens from across the galaxy. Each team has one objective: to capture and hold the castle at the very center of the battlefield. Strategy, alliances, pitched battles, and, of course, betrayal ... It all makes for great fun and even greater television. After all, none of these powerful aliens really die when they’re playing war. Except this time. This time, winner takes all. Those who fall, stay in the ground.

Didn't get better from book 6 like I'd hoped
Revisado: 03-11-25
This has been a great series, so it's a must listen, but book 6 and 7 had some issues. I was hoping in my review of book 6 that it would get back on track with book 7. It did not. Like book 6, less funny, but also book 7 was a bit scattered. I'm not sure what the whole chapter about Christmas was about. I suspect it was a flashback, but I'd have to re-listen to the whole series to freshen earlier content in my brain. There were several chapters or sections like that where the perspective jumped without warning. You are listening along, and all of a sudden you are in left field and not knowing how you got there. It was still a good story and a must if you are a die-hard Dungeon Crawler fan, but I'm worried that Dinniman is losing steam on this and the publisher is pushing him to put out new content without regard to quality. Crossing my fingers that Carl comes of the slump with book 8!

Historia
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

Revisado: 03-10-25
It was a good story, but the writing is a bit stiff and awkward at times. There are good characters and the story is interesting. I'll watch for book2 on Audible plus, but I won't sink a credit into the second book.

Historia
When a cunning enemy enslaves the kingdom, a famed warlock-knight must survive a gauntlet of perils to save his people. Augum Stone is only 16 and already a legend. But these feats came with a price - he needs combat to feel alive, to test his limits. As Augum struggles with restraint, a callous enemy kingdom enslaves his people. And that enemy wants more than mere control.

Better than book 1
Revisado: 03-02-25
If book 2 wasn't in Audible Plus, I would have never listened to it as book 1 was just okay. Book 2 brought you deeper into the universe of the "Fury of a Rising Dragon" universe. You also got a deeper look at the primary characters. It's not great, but it's a good solid read with some entertainment. The characters are developing well and the storyline is moving along. Overall, it's a bit on the kid's storybook side with good and bad easily defined and events moving to make sure you learn a lesson about how being good means you will succeed when you give it your all! This doesn't make it bad, just a little bit predictable. I'll look for book 3 to join Audible Plus or go on a $5 sale, but I'm of to other books for now.

Which one is not like the others
Revisado: 02-04-25
I'm not sure why they shoehorned this story in with Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained, but while it's in the same universe and give a bit of prehistory of the other books, it doesn't belong with this grouping and is disappointing when shoved in with two other novels that were so action packed. It wasn't a bad story and if I read it as "Commonwealth Saga" 0.5 The prehistory of Commonwealth technology, I would probably have like it more.

I want to love it
Revisado: 02-04-25
The story is quirky. The main character is sarcastic and a bit snarky. The ideas are from a very different perspective. Despite all of these winning parts of the book, it is sometimes hard to read and the story is all over the place. I find my mind wondering in some areas where the story has stalled or the author is working through some internal gymnastics to explain something. The story is unique and has some good parts. I'm putting book 2 in my wishlist and will likely pick it up eventually.
