I am amazingly going into book 4 of Beware of Chicken full of anticipation. It continues to be wholesome and interesting. I love the character development and the thin edge of being interesting and being light-hearted.

This is a pretty good series that improves as it goes on. I have to admit, early in the series I had a terrible feeling it may turn into a harem novel. I'm relieved to say that it did not go that (way which is usually a cheap save for a bad series when the author runs out of ideas). Instead, it shows good character development and many layers of world building.

Fun story!

Although it centers around a teenage boy it is a very relatable story well presented.

It starts well and only becomes more interesting as it continues. I can't wait for the next one! I may have to go to text on this one since it looks like this is the only audiobook in the series. I'll miss the narrator's performance though :)

Fantastic book

The book itself is wonderfully written and brought to life by the reader (don't listen to the one guy who says otherwise).

The people and the place are real to me. The one draw back to the series as a whole is because it is a coming of age book and I am a bit past that. Not the book's fault- it's just where I'm coming from. I wish I had Naomi Novik's books when I was at that point in my life- but it is still enthralling now nevertheless.

modern fairy tale

The Narrator was fantastic and has a very soothing voice. I have enjoyed her reading before in other books.

I admit I have a special love for modern fairy tale and this has it all: mythical creatures, valiant struggle in battle, love interest, and a goal that binds it all together.

The only thing I wonder is if I would have liked it better with a little less love interest and more focus on the main character's own goals. She often protests that she has goals and interests outside that of her pursuer, but so much of the plot revolves around the powerful men who show an interest in her. She never treads into what I would name silly girl weakness where a once strong female character becomes subservient to a man deferring to his greater intelligence or experience, but I did worry about that at points.

That being said, it is a very good book just shy of being truly great. 5 stars.

Yes, I know the words are supposed to be pronounced differently from the other books, but it's still a little annoying. ...The stand outs being names of people. I don't care how you pronounce Bouda, but I care about Simon and Mahon. If you want to change pronunciation, you need to justify it- probably say something like " Kate always drove people crazy by mispronouncing their names" and then keep it consistent for Kate's character.

Beyond that, the performance was spectacular. I like that it's a different narrator from Renée. As much as I love to hear Renee we aren't listening to Kate, Julie's voice is innately different and it's right to hear a different person.

I love all of Ilona Andrews books, but this one did seem a little shorter than usual. The imagination and writing are superb as always.

Anti-hero Extraordinaire

Full of twists and turns, the narrator tells an alternate story to the original. you don't always love him or hate him, but he's always entertaining. A story well told and well spoken. Bravo to both author and speaker. Loved the inflections given to Loki's dialogue.
