Such excellent writing and story telling. I always love the quotes at the beginning of the chapters. Fantastic ending.

Wonderful that Ms Hutchinson is young enough to have the opportunity and recent memories of her early family life to reflect on how it shaped her later years. Also, her descriptions of her young adult life as an intern in DC seemed to be presented truthfully and not whitewashed … lots of work but fun too and a great sneak peek into that life. So glad she was able to survive the tumultuous Trump years and come out the other side with her honor and integrity in tact. A brave role model.

Lots of unreliable narrators in this one. Who can you trust? Story line was interesting but the performance
didn’t work for me. I will read the next one instead of listen.

I was really disappointed in the narration. Story wise, I can see where Some of the situations have probably come from Secretary Clinton’s first hand experience. But other elements seem so far fetched and improbable. I think this might make a good movie, but really did have trouble listening to the whole book. I’d say skip the audio and try reading it.

A well written book with lots of layers

So glad to have the opportunity to hear Director Comey read this. It is a book with lots of layers. From a management perspective he shows us clearly that Non partisan leadership in a politicized environment is tremendously complex and illustrates how leading with values provides a solid base from which to make the soundest judgment possible. From a civics lesson standpoint, it provides organizational insight into the federal judicial system and the importance of the appropriate relationships between the justice department, the FBI, and the Executive branch. And all of this scholarly information is tied together with Director Comey’s personal experiences and insights.

This was my first Robin Cook novel. I was disappointed because the characters were really one dimensional. The conversations were shallow. I think I really noticed this because I have been listening to detective series where you see the same characters from one novel to the next and the author has a chance to develop them. On the positive side, the setting in India was well described. The story line about the medical tourism trade was interesting, but not well crafted from my perspective.

I really like the way that JD Vance did not gloss over any detail regarding his upbringing and the people who shaped his life. The book's authenticity is solidified because we hear the story in the author's own voice. This honest approach really gives the reader a sense of how a community and identity come about and the impact that has on each individual. Very well done.

Not the best book for an audio version

I was curious to listen to a Peter Robinson novel outside the Inspector Banks series. I have to admit that I only got a few chapters in, but I thought the characters were stereotypical and shallow (they might have developed if I'd stuck with it). There was some explicit description and dialogue of sexual activities too, which I typically don't like to hear, but that's just me. I wasn't a fan of the narration either .... it was delivered in a kind of flat "noir" style that just didn't appeal to me. I think that sometimes books just don't translate well into audio format .... they might make for a fun, quick read but the addition of the narrator's voice to the mix detracts. Maybe I'll try reading it sometime instead.

Contemporary Social Problems and Poetry

Peter Robinson expertly and sensitively wraps this novel around some very contemporary issues: long buried sexual abuse cases revolving around once popular TV or music icons; modern day sex trade issues involving underage girls, and community/police relations in ethnic communities. Robinson writes about two different cases - one a 50 year old cold case of sexual abuse and the other a current day murder of a young girl involved in the sex trade. As he did with "In a Dry Season", Robinson uses a memoir written by the victim, now a grown woman and well-known poet, to tell her version of the abuse by the music icon many years ago. In crafting the story of the murder related to modern day sex trade, Robinson grapples with issues like racism and community/police relations. Of course, as in all the Inspector Banks novels, musical references abound and exploring the literary references to poetry in this story could create a mini-project for the reader once the book is over. Simon Prebble knows these characters and his voice combined with Robinson's poetic writing style make for an excellent listen.

Who do you trust

What a great and unique story told from the points of view the three women characters. From the beginning the reader is hard pressed to tell who is reliable and who isn't. The combination of the authors excellent work on creating the characters' internal dialogues and the narrators expression of them is well done . I especially enjoyed the narrator who was the voice of Megan. The writing had a lot of poetic qualities and that always translates well into the spoken word. This was a great listen.
