Finally, a hero who’s not a Navy SEAL!
Revisado: 03-17-25
Lots of action, fast paced.
The author’s dislike of fundamentalists may be creeping in a little bit too much.
I loved it. The hero is a reconnaissance marine rather than the typical Navy SEAL used for these type of stories.
I appreciate the author honoring other special warfare units, and particularly the Marine Corps!
some of the earlier diving novels could’ve used some subject matter experts about air consumption PSI … but hey this is fiction!

Indeed, Wounding Warriors: How Bad Policy Is Making Veterans Sicker and Poorer is a transformational effort of research into the Department of Veterans Affairs and the US military. Authors Daniel Gade - retired US Army lieutenant colonel, professor, public policy leader, and former US Senate candidate from Virginia - and former Wall Street Journal Reporter Daniel Huang interviewed dozens of veterans who saw the perverse structure of incentives within the VA from the inside.

I highly recommend this book to learn how our current system of veterans care actually is making our veterans sicker and creating a new class of special interest groups.

Historia
Blackout Wars is about the historically unprecedented threat to our electronic civilization from its dependence on the electric power grid. In a nationwide blackout lasting months or years, the entire population of the US could be at risk. There would be no food. No water. Communications, transportation, industry, business, and finance - all of the critical infrastructures that support modern civilization would be paralyzed. Threats to the electric power grid are posed by cyber-attack, sabotage, a geomagnetic super-storm, and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the high-altitude detonation of a nuclear weapon.

It is like hearing the same chapter over and over for hours. The topic is relevant and I am interested in this topic, but by the end I was hoping for an EMP so I would not have to listen to another repeat of the same information.

Interesting concept that could’ve been communicated in a brief article. Essentially, this book is about how to do little things that don’t matter.

But when an EMP causes the plane he’s in to crash on the remote, snow-covered mountains of North Carolina, he’s rescued by Beth "Bluebird" Sullivan, who claims to have lived off the grid since she was born. Beth brings him back to an isolated cabin to recover while waiting for her father to come back from the nearby town. Wow, what rich characters
Revisado: 09-07-20
Jack Hunt really took us away from the usual grid down prepper story. While it is hard for me to get past the first installments in most grid down books, this one is worth going on the next installment.
Jack avoids the use of idiomatic and cliché writing as is so common in this genre! Very original!
Miles Meili did a great job of narration! He has a rich voice and good inflection!

Good Read

Started out with a narrative voice, got good in the middle, then finished with cliches and a lead into the next book.
Not preachy, or an over abundance of prepper jargon like so many in this genre.
Great narration!

Historia
In 2012, on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan, an improvised explosive device left Dan Crenshaw's right eye destroyed and his left blinded. Only through the careful hand of his surgeons, and what doctors called a miracle, did Crenshaw's left eye recover partial vision. And yet, he persevered, completing two more deployments. Why? There are certain stories we tell ourselves about the hardships we face—we can become paralyzed by adversity or we can adapt and overcome. We can be fragile or we can find our fortitude. Crenshaw delivers a set of lessons to help you do just that.
