Historia
All year the half-bloods have been preparing for battle against the Titans, knowing the odds of victory are grim. Kronos's army is stronger than ever, and with every god and half-blood he recruits, the evil Titan's power only grows. While the Olympians struggle to contain the rampaging monster Typhon, Kronos begins his advance on New York City, where Mount Olympus stands virtually unguarded. Now it's up to Percy Jackson and an army of young demigods to stop the Lord of Time.

Historia
Earth failed. In a desperate bid to escape, the spaceship Enkidu and its captain, Heorest Holt, carried its precious human cargo to a potential new paradise. Generations later, this fragile colony has managed to survive, eking out a hardy existence. Yet life is tough, and much technological knowledge has been lost. Then strangers appear. They possess unparalleled knowledge and thrilling technology–and they've arrived from another world to help humanity’s colonies. But not all is as it seems, and the price of the strangers' help may be the colony itself.

Thoughtful but a tad repetitive
Revisado: 03-09-23
With such a large scope of world building established in the first two books, it makes sense that the last book in the Children trilogy would need to become more meta than its predecessors. And although the payoff is worth it, the journey is slightly too repetitive for me to give the book five stars.
The concepts explored in this book aren’t the easiest to grasp, and the structure is challenging, but even so I didn’t need quite so many repeated explanations to get it.
It is still a solid entry into the wonderful Children trilogy, and fans will find a lot to love.

Historia
The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, a midden, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, prisoner, survivor.

Narration excellent, book engrossing
Revisado: 03-07-23
This book captured my attention, even though it is fairly bleak. It’s not a masterpiece like Children of Time is, but then what is? However it is a solid entry, with strong characterization of the main character, and themes that resonate with both current and recurring issues of human life.
This book is more of a man’s world than his other books, with several female characters being viewed through fairly narrow lenses. However, unlike many authors, this is actually done intentionally, and even explicitly called out several times.
Overall, this was another strong book and I’m thrilled to have found this prolific and talented author.

Historia
Most people think of themselves as “good", but it’s not always easy to determine what’s “good” or “bad” - especially in a world filled with complicated choices and pitfalls and booby traps and bad advice. Fortunately, many smart philosophers have been pondering this conundrum for millennia, and they have guidance for us. With bright wit and deep insight, How to Be Perfect explains concepts like deontology, utilitarianism, existentialism, ubuntu, and more, so we can sound cool at parties and become better people.

Ethics as a Schur thing
Revisado: 02-16-22
Schur’s amiable but deeply caring overview of Western moral philosophy is as perfect as possible. It’s funny and heartfelt, and its occasional forays into too much navel gazing are forgivable, as Schur is conscious of his own limitations. Overall, its greatest accomplishment is making ethical philosophy both understandable and engaging.

Historia
In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platform that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, a simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity's broad history, mankind had discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall - and the ability to forget it ever happened.

Didn’t add anything to Wool IMO
Revisado: 11-21-21
Didn’t add anything important to Wool; plotting of the bad guys was impenetrable; Donald, Anna, and Sherman were all reprehensible but in boring ways; Jimmy acted too young to be 16 initially; no good female characters—Helen was incredibly bland and Anna was not developed. I liked Mission and the Crow but [spoilers]. Even though motivations and the technology were obsessed about for much of book, they are both opaque IMO.
Frustrated by this read.

Historia
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

Too campy for the retrospective novel format...should have been the movie it was originally intended to be
Revisado: 09-06-20
Too campy for the retrospective novel format...should have been the movie it was originally intended to be. Also, the yoga instructor started off as truly scary (her brand of sly sunshine-filled domination was terrifying!) but did not live up to the threat she should have been. The book would have been scarier as a face off between three female alphas.
Nonetheless, I loved Mostar to pieces and I thought Jane Goodall’s description of the chimps was one of the scariest things I’d ever heard. The fight scenes were delightfully chilling; rocks and thwocks—yikes!
Finally, the device of contrasting the mistrustful and stoic true survivors (Palomino and Mostar) against the eco-techno-intellectuals with their tender but clueless attitudes was excellent, and provided the true heart of the novel.

Historia
S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (i.e. "those idiots"), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos®. Then Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to think something isn't quite right. Even the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis, fails to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis.

A surprise delight!
Revisado: 09-06-20
The performance the reader gave was incredible! He brought out the humor and the pathos perfectly. I wanted to listen to the cat chapters on repeat.
Re: the story: The themes were often a little too on the nose and I didn’t think we needed every villain we got...BUT the incredible prose, the delightful main characters, and hilarious insults all kept me charmed throughout. I adored S.T., Big Jim, and Dennis so much!

Our world has ended five times: It has been broiled, frozen, poison gassed, smothered, and pelted by asteroids. In The Ends of the World, Peter Brannen dives into deep time, exploring Earth's past dead ends, and in the process offers us a glimpse of our possible future. Many scientists now believe that the climate shifts of the 21st century have analogs in these five extinctions.

Incredible
Revisado: 12-20-17
Made the alien worlds of past spring to life and the dusty, incremental work of paleontologists and geologists seems as epic and exciting as superheroes. But most impressively, it explained concepts like deep time and geological kill mechanisms in lush prose filled with insight and humor.
The reading was fantastic: I could listen at 1.25x and easily catch the full nuance of tone. I could tell when breaks in the text were occurring but never thought “hurry up!”
