Historia
A gargantuan, mind-altering comedy about the Pursuit of Happiness in America set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family to come along in recent fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to so dominate our lives; about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.

Addictive story once you give it a chance
Revisado: 10-07-20
I’ve tried to listen to this audiobook for four years, and gave up many times. This past month I purchased the actual book and used online lit-chart chapter summaries to digest the book (I had a similar issue with War and Peace, and I had corrected it that way three months ago). While it’s a long book, I plan on re-listening to it in the future. Once you can comprehend many of the subplots and how they interweave with the main action, it’s way more interesting.

Historia
In the small coastal city of Oran, Algeria, rats begin rising up from the filth, only to die as bloody heaps in the streets. Shortly after, an outbreak of the bubonic plague erupts and envelops the human population. Albert Camus' The Plague is a brilliant and haunting rendering of human perseverance and futility in the face of a relentless terror born of nature.

Camus can really dissect an epidemic over it’s various emotions
Revisado: 04-05-20
I’m listening to this one again while my current town (Seattle) is shut down due to coronavirus. Many of these similarities of the plague dreamt up in theory by Camus helps make sense of the times that we are currently living through right now. Epidemics deal will so much tragedy, yet Camus points out no matter how dismal it may seem, there is always more to admire in humans rather than despise.

A wealth of information on the film industry throughout the years from the editor’s angle
Revisado: 03-31-20
Paul Hirsch dives directly into his work as a film editor over the years, featuring stories from when editing early Brian De Palma projects with Robert De Nero during the New Hollywood Renaissance of independent filmmaking back in early 70’s New York, to stories about working on Star Wars ranging from the Lucas Ranch in Marin County California, to working on set in London to breaking onto working on Hollywood sets as well. Hirsch fairly looks at the ups and downs which his success has given him. He remembers the flops just as much as his successful projects. He also explains the importance of a good director/editor relationship. This is an ever-changing industry, and Paul Hirsch does a real good job at putting a continuity to life as an editor which jumps form working on Steinbeck editing tables to Avid computer software. He has a great respect for the editing craft. I highly recommend this book for folks interested in filmmaking or film history.

Historia
Walt Whitman explores the freedom of the wanderer, the sorrow of the pallbearer, and the spirit of the adventurer in his remarkable collection of poems, Leaves Of Grass. Both an explorer of cultural thought and a lover of sensual pleasure, Whitman champions the cause of common men, and revels in emotional and physical love. In plain and beautiful language, Whitman redefined the world of poetry.

Historia
How remarkable that an Italian living in the 15th and 16th centuries should lend his name to a word still in common usage in the English language today. Nicolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) wrote only one major work as a gift for his ruling Prince, Lorenzo de Medici. Machiavelli held office as a senior civil servant for 14 years until the downfall of the Republic in 1512. No longer officially employed to impart advice, instead Machiavelli poured out his ideas and resentment in his writings.

Narrator from British "House of Cards" adds depth
Revisado: 09-16-15
I enjoys this audiobook version of Machiavelli's "The Prince" more than the others because Ian Richardson gives it the proper depth and emotion you would expect from a classic philosophical work from the Renaissance about power and how to keep it.

Love this book
Revisado: 01-16-15
I received the book as a graduation present 16 years ago and I've re-read it again and again over the years. Glad to find an audiobook of it. The reader does a good job reading the book as well. I wish someone would make an audiobook of the Fall in English some time in the future.
