Historia
On July 4, 2022, a shooter climbed onto a rooftop in Highland Park, Illinois, and opened fire on a Fourth of July parade below, killing seven people and wounding dozens more. Prosecutors charged Robert “Bobby” Crimo III with the mass shooting. But this attack was part of something even more insidious. Bobby had created an elaborate game—complete with cryptic videos, a book of numbers, and an eerie online presence—designed to seed a conspiracy theory about the massacre.

Finished in a Day
Revisado: 04-12-25
Finished in a day because I couldn’t stop listening. Makes me really want to delve more into the causes behind such horrible events, which I’ve found myself trying to understand more. Hopefully science can find some more solutions to help prevent them. The title is worth listening to, especially if you enjoy Audible Originals. It had a few frustrating moments, which I think any good story will, but it didn’t take away from anything. Will be adding to my recommendations for others.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Never before has an author’s narration of his fiction been so important to fully grasping the book’s impact and global implications. Taking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Their intertwined lives, and their fates, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them.

Fantastic book that has definitely made an impact on me. Mixed feelings overall. I definitely didn’t walk away from this in the best of spirits, but some of the best books tend to do that to you by offering a dark perspective that just really rocks your core. Deep, difficult, and beautiful.

Seems like a genuine person
Revisado: 03-18-25
Very well written, especially since Dave wrote the book himself and didn’t use a ghostwriter. My only complaint is wishing he went a little more into his younger years and time with Nirvana. It’s now gotten me to want to watch a documentary on the band, which I’m sure will have some crazy coverage itself. The stories were funny but deep and there’s an overall warmth to the book as a whole, especially when he speaks of his family. He seems like a really great guy.

Historia
Are stars like Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, and Serena Williams genetic freaks put on Earth to dominate their respective sports? Or are they simply normal people who overcame their biological limits through sheer force of will and obsessive training? In this controversial and engaging exploration of athletic success, Sports Illustrated senior writer David Epstein tackles the great nature vs. nurture debate and traces how far science has come in solving this great riddle.

Worth reading
Revisado: 03-17-25
This was a bit long in explaining what I would consider to be mostly obvious - that some athletes have better genetic predispositions to aid their ability for success than others. For example, being 6’10 versus 5’7 and playing in the NBA. It goes into more depth with much more subtle genes, however, and I found it to be a great follow-up to Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. If you’ve heard of the 10,000 rule, most of the conclusions are based on those who already had particularly gifted genetics, so this book goes into more of the front-sided piece of the puzzle. Another book like this that I feel is worth mentioning is titled Bounce by Matthew Syed, for those interested.

The setting is the Georgia wilderness, where the state's most remote white-water river awaits. In the thundering froth of that river, in its echoing stone canyons, four men on a canoe trip discover a freedom and exhilaration beyond compare. I’m convinced this book has to be super underrated. Where has this been? It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. Wow. The writing, plot, characters, you name it. Perfection in every way. The movie is a classic as well, but the book is thrilling beyond any expectations I had. Just wow. Great, great read.

Tragic, but not like Lolita
Revisado: 02-27-25
What the author went through is of obvious importance and I won’t be overly critical for the sake of not wanting to seem heartless. I truly sympathize with her and want that to be known. However, I found it a bit odd how determined she was to continually compare her story to that of the book Lolita or to present it in such a way. It seems more of her trying to intertwine the two due to her abuser’s obsession with the book more than anything else and I found them to be completely different from each other.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Good but overrated to me
Revisado: 02-27-25
This went back and forth from a challenge to keep reading to something I couldn’t put away. Back and forth for a while. The beginning was very slow - Chapter 2 specifically was extremely sluggish, but it eventually picked up and went into deep details about Chernobyl, the science behind the event, and the politics/history of the time (and after). Overall, it was good, but I’d be lying if I said I could finish it quickly.

One of my favorite movies, now one of my favorite books
Revisado: 02-16-25
One of, if not my favorite movies of all time. I’d decided to check out the book after seeing the movie and thought the film couldn’t have been portrayed in a better light. I’m under the impression the book was written with the intent of being a screenplay, which is what it reads like, but this is common with the author. Some people may not enjoy that but I’ve always found it unique in the best way. If you like Cormac McCarthy, you can’t dislike this one. It was perfect in its writing; presentation, length, characters - you name it.

Historia
As a child growing up in North Korea, Hyeonseo Lee was one of millions trapped by a secretive and brutal communist regime. Her home on the border with China gave her some exposure to the world beyond the confines of the Hermit Kingdom and, as the famine of the 1990s struck, she began to wonder, question and realise that she had been brainwashed her entire life. Given the repression, poverty and starvation she witnessed surely her country could not be, as she had been told, 'the best on the planet'?

Beyond expectations
Revisado: 02-15-25
One of the better books I’ve ever finished. Hyeonseo Lee, the author, describes her journey of escaping North Korea at only 17 years old. These are the types of books you read and become a better person due to the lessons shown through the author’s perspective and is an immediate recommendation. Also, as a side note, there’s a YouTube video from Fern titled “How to Escape North Korea”, which went over this book and is also worth watching. If you’re considering this next, go ahead and start it - you won’t regret it.

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

4/5 overall
Revisado: 02-08-25
For those interested in reading, I would note this is a very thorough read that covers not only the history of influenza, but also politics, economics, trade, war, and many important individuals in history during these times. As a biology major, a lot of the explained science was easy to understand, but I know before going back to college to pursue my undergraduate degree, some of those chapters would have been more difficult, which may be important for a typical reader. The text was also, at times, a bit dragging. However, I couldn’t imagine another book going into the depth and related topics that it did in a way that would’ve kept my interest throughout, which this book surely did.
