Historia
At the tender age of 10, Fanny Price is 'adopted' by her rich relations and is removed from the poverty of her home in Portsmouth to the opulence of Mansfield Park. The transplantation is not a happy one. Dependent, helpless, neglected and forgotten, Fanny struggles to come to terms with her new life until, tested almost to the limits of endurance, she assumes her rightful role....

Jane Austen’s clever dialogue
Revisado: 04-04-25
Juliet Stevenson’s wonderful narration of the incomparable Jane Austen is a perfect combination. Listening to her bring each character to life, I forget there’s only one person narrating.

Historia
In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and - despite her prosthetic leg - helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.

A fascinating story about an incredible woman
Revisado: 02-15-25
The book held my interest all the way through. It’s unimaginable what some in the French resistance went through, and Virginia Hall was at the forefront. In addition to fighting the enemy, she had to endure her talents being underrated by both the British and Americans. Nevertheless, she served as long as she could. She was the definition of an unsung hero.

Historia
Towards Zero: What is the connection among a failed suicide attempt, a wrongful accusation of theft against a schoolgirl, and the romantic life of a famous tennis player? To the casual observer, apparently nothing. But when a house party gathers at Gull’s Point, the seaside home of an elderly widow, earlier events come to a dramatic head. Ordeal By Innocence: According to the courts, Jacko Argyle bludgeoned his mother to death with a poker. The sentence was life imprisonment.

Revisado: 10-19-24
Agatha Christie’s plots and characters engaged my interest immediately. Hugh Fraser is such a talented narrator that I forget he’s doing all the voices. It really sounds like each character is being read by a different person. He’s the best!

Historia
Philip - elusive, complex, controversial, challenging, often humorous, sometimes irascible - is the man Elizabeth II once described as her 'constant strength and guide'. Who was he? What was he really like? What is the truth about those 'gaffes' and the rumours of affairs? This is the final portrait of an unexpected and often much-misunderstood figure. It is also the portrait of a remarkable marriage that endured for more than 70 years.

Some new information and a view of the royal marriage from someone who saw it in private moments
Revisado: 09-19-24
Detailed lineages which I didn’t always follow; probably would have been better in print. However, the book was full of what felt like insider information which I found interesting. The author is respectful of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth, both of whom he genuinely admired. The author’s narration is very easy and pleasant to listen to. The book held my interest from beginning to end.

Historia
Some $65 billion evaporated during Bernie Madoff’s epic confidence game. Two people were driven to suicide in the wake of the Ponzi Scheme’s exposure. Others went to prison. But there has never been a satisfying accounting for how Bernie got away with so much, for so long. Until now. Shocking, infuriating, riveting (and at times absurdly funny), Madoff shows us how Bernie ensnared thousands of investors. As Behar’s dogged reporting over the last fifteen years makes clear, however, there aren’t many innocents left standing by the end of this tale.

It seemed to me the author wanted to justify Madoff even at the end. It sounded as if the author had been charmed, even after detailing Madoff’s actions that hurt so many.

Who has not come to know and love the impeccable Jeeves and the inimitable Bertie? Together with Lord Emsworth, his prize sow the Empress of Blandings, Psmith, and a whole host of redoubtable Wooster aunts, they form a cast of characters, immortalized in print and on screen, whose sharply observed antics are as popular now as when they first appeared in 1919.

Enjoyable for Wodehouse fans
Revisado: 10-11-23
By the end of the book, I felt I had a sense of Wodehouse’s personality, not merely the facts of his life. The book ends abruptly with his death which felt unsatisfactory as I was curious about his wife’s life afterwards. Maybe I just didn’t want the story to end. I think this book will be most satisfactory to those who have read a good deal of P. G. Wodehouse’s writings and are familiar with English authors. A lot of time was spent on the war time, broadcasts and the aftermath, but that seems appropriate because that episode colored his life forever after. The results of this book will be to whet your appetite for reading and rereading his books.

Historia
For millions of people, both in Britain and across the world, Elizabeth II is the embodiment of monarchy. Her long life spans nearly a century of national and global history, from a time before the Great Depression to the era of COVID-19. Her reign embraces all but seven years of Britain's postwar history; she has been served by 15 UK prime ministers from Churchill to Johnson, and witnessed the administrations of 13 US presidents from Truman to Trump. The vast majority of Britons cannot remember a world without Elizabeth II as head of state and the Commonwealth.

A British perspective
Revisado: 08-17-21
The narration is wonderful which, in my opinion, is almost as important as the story. I’m now a confirmed Eleanor Bron fan and will seek out other books narrated by her. The author is sympathetic to Queen Elizabeth but not sycophantic. He admits errors in judgment and missteps; however, it’s his opinion that she has devoted her life to her understanding of her duty and this biography celebrates her for it. It held my attention all the way through. Highly recommended.
