Historia
Mordecai Tremaine, former tobacconist and perennial lover of romance novels, has been invited to spend Christmas in the sleepy village of Sherbroome at the country retreat of one Benedict Grame. Arriving on Christmas Eve, he finds that the revelries are in full flow - but so too are tensions amongst the assortment of guests. Midnight strikes and the party-goers discover that it's not just presents nestling under the tree...there's a dead body, too. A dead body that bears a striking resemblance to Father Christmas.

golden age, if that's what you want
Revisado: 12-13-23
narrator was great. mystery is of the golden age mystery style, and to my taste, not the very best example. if you fancy taking a walking journey with a mildly eccentric golden age detective as he ruminates his way to the end of a mystery set in a british manor house, though, this might be just the ticket.

most stage worthy reading ever
Revisado: 06-08-22
I have to first praise this reading. it's almost as if one is listening to a dramatized version, the narrative is so expressive. Just loved that. About the book, Mary Stewart is one of my favorite authors, and this is despite the fact that women are not exactly depicted as being equal to men in the stories. Yes, the heroines are vivacious and more capable than they think they are, and they really get into the action. Yet there is this overtone of limitations of gender roles in being female that doesn't sit too well nowadays. This book has a gay character who is only partially stereotyped, which is, I suppose, better than it might be for midcentury writing. (Certainly some other fabulous golden age authors, such as Ngaio Marsh, did less well.) That being said, the books are superb at setting scene and creating headlong action and at the same time being wry and good humored and romantic. This one features a varied and fun cast of characters, including two romantic leads who are on the young side, for a sprightly feel.

beautiful performance
Revisado: 08-10-21
The reader here is simply amazing with all kinds of voices, including women's voices. this is the second of a series of the authors books set outside of the regency that star rakes and bad boys and unusual women they fall in love with. The violence against women is tough to take at times. The rest of the book, though, has the author's wonderful trademark characterizations and comedy of manners.

Historia
The pioneer of romantic suspense, Mary Stewart leads her listeners on an unforgettable ride across the Isle of Skye in this tale perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and Barbara Pym. Following a heartbreaking divorce, Gianetta retreats to the Isle of Skye hoping to find tranquillity in the island's savage beauty. But shortly before her arrival a girl's body is found on the craggy slopes of the looming Blue Mountain, and with the murderer still on the loose, there's nothing to stop him from setting his sights on Gianetta next....

gorgeously read
Revisado: 06-07-21
Perhaps the most purely eerie of Mary Stewart's exemplary gothic romances, this is a highly effective story but does show its age in the dated gender attitudes toward marriage. I had difficulty discounting this when listening because one can't skip over things as one can when reading. The performance was outstanding. It's one of the few instances of books that I know well where the audio version is more striking and dramatic then when it is experienced in print. Big bravo to Lucy Paterson.

Vanessa March's husband, Lewis, is meant to be on a business trip in Stockholm - so why does he briefly appear in newsreel footage of a fire at a circus in Vienna, with his arm around another woman? Vanessa flies to Austria to find her husband, inadvertently becoming involved in a mystery that spans three countries...and the famous dancing stallions of the Spanish Riding School. The moonlight flooded the meadow, blanching all colours to its own ghostly silver. The pines were very black.

Historia
Ngaio Marsh’s most popular novel begins when a young New Zealander’s first contact with the English gentry is the body of Lord Wutherford - with a meat skewer through the eye.... The Lampreys had plenty of charm - but no cash. They all knew they were peculiar - and rather gloried in it. The double and triple charades, for instance, with which they would entertain their guests - like rich but awful Uncle Gabriel, who was always such a bore.
