Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Second time through and I understand a little better
Revisado: 04-18-25
Second time through and I understand a little better the story that is being told. i had forgotten how spicy some parts of the book are and in some cases I find the graphic sex to be gratuitous. I am familiar with the L Frank Baum books and, of course, The Wizard of Oz movie, but I have yet to see the Broadway play or movie of "Wicked". Each medium seems to tell its own version of the story of mythic Oz and its inhabitants. This book seems to fit as the backstory to the original movie. I can't imagine how the Broadway soundtrack makes sense with this book. I'm looking forward to finding out. So far, the book is a tortured story of political intrigue in which the author never really quite connects the dots.

Historia
Ruth Winters is retired, widowed, and resigned to spending the rest of her life alone in her suburban home. She likes her routine and uses it to avoid having to spend time with other people. She probably wouldn’t call herself fulfilled, but it’s too late now to go chasing happiness. Then three things happen at once: a beloved niece makes a big announcement, an old flame reaches out, and her estranged sister receives life-changing news.

Too simplistic
Revisado: 03-27-25
After some of the books I've read recently, this seemed very simplistic in language and in style. I thought it would be interesting to read about a woman of around my own age who had been reluctant to embrace change until circumstances interfered to change her. It did that, but not in as satisfying a way as it might have. If I had been hungry for a piece of bread and butter this would have been a cracker; both keep you from being hungry, but one is so much more satisfying than the other.

Felt like it could turn dark at any moment
Revisado: 03-15-25
One of those books that feels like it could turn into a psychological thriller at any moment; you wait for there to be an ax mudrrer or a kidnapper or such. I won't give away the ending, but the book kept me guessing. Well written and well read.

An historic novel about the entry into WWI
Revisado: 03-12-25
A significant amount of this book takes place in Vienna. In the years leading up to the start of WWI. This book, originally written in German and translated to English gives a whole new perspective on life in the Austro-Hungarian Empire of the era. It is written about a time and place of which I had only a passing knowledge, so part of what I gained was some of the social history of the era of the dual monarchy. I enjoyed it a great deal and would recommend to friends who are interested in historical fiction.

I saw it coming
Revisado: 03-09-25
4.5 Stars. A modern comedy of errors and misdirection in this sweet romance set mostly in NYC. As a Gestalt therapist, it's always fun to read about well written fictional therapists. I did have the plot twist figured out really early so some of the anticipation was waiting to see how the author chose to resolve the story.... and no, unlike our protagonist, I did not read the end first.

Part memoir, Part cookbook
Revisado: 03-07-25
I was fascinated by the cultural Jewishness the author's family embodied, her descriptions of the mix of observance and non-observance mirrors our family's own NY Jewish roots. With a front row seat, Patricia Volk invites us into her world of mid-20th-century life in New York City. Beyond the restaurant world into which she gives us a peek, we can also see how business was done and the weird disconnects between lipsevice to ideas and the reality of how life was lived: all people are the same, but the housekeeper makes in a week what that purse you just bought on a whim costs, etc.
If you like food history combined with stories about how people really lived, you'll enjoy this story of one of the popular restaurateurs in the city.

Completely engrossing
Revisado: 02-28-25
A book about a lifelong friendship and the ways we weave our lives around another. As a woman of about the same era as Phoebe and Suze with a friend I've known since college this book was SO relatable. Passionate, intimate friendships that have the power to take you to the highest highs, but also the power to destroy you. The gaps in connection and the heartfilling joy of reconnecting pepper this story of love and loss as the friends grow from their tween years to the age of grandmothers.
This was not an easy book to read on some levels as it contains violence against girls/women that is pretty graphic. But that also forms the foundation for the plot. I had a very hard time putting it down - good thing I haven't had much on my docket the last few days!

So many extra words
Revisado: 02-24-25
This was a good effort as a plot but it needed a tighter editing job and a better sense of pacing. The author used so many words it began to feel like she was trying too hard. I also hate the troop of running into danger instead of away from it that is found in a lot of contemporary horror thriller films and novels. Let's run into the barn instead of into the perfectly good working car in the driveway seems like a stupid thing for a human to do. I have never understood it as a device to advance the plot. And in this book those kinds of reactions come off as a device. On the positive side there are many women who are not what they seem in this book which is therefore an intriguing title. I think the basic plot was well developed and well thought out but in the course of the novel possibly revealed too soon. Technically I give it 3 and a half stars.

Delightful
Revisado: 02-19-25
My mother loved this series when she was a girl. they were out of print when I was growing up. so nice to be able to hear them. I'm sorry she's not around any longer to talk to any them. Such typically British "free range" children in a story akin to Narnia or Peter Pan all taking place under the watchful, but not interfering eyes of the collective adults on the lake. A book of summer and sailing and camping joys and much to be learned about them all as well as one's own skills and limits.

A good follow-up to "She's Not There"
Revisado: 02-16-25
Jennifer Finney Boylan continues sharing her life's journey and fills in some of the background we've not heard before. Where "She's Not There " ends with the author’s life having become "Maddy" to her young sons, this book beings with those children grown and embarking on their own paths. Ms Boylan discusses aging as a trans- woman as well as what it means for women to age. Where the first book was written in the era of society's exploration and educational period on transgender issues, this one has been released during a time of backlash and insane new rules and laws that only serve to humiliate folks the MAGA right doesn't even try to understand. Ms Boylan confronts these difficult times head on and without apparent fear. - I had a little trouble with the seemingly chapters as essays format and there is some repetition her editor should have corrected for, but generally a solid 4 Stars from me and an important book if you really want to learn and understand. Education is the key to unlocking the box the fearful right cling to so fiercely. Why in the name of Cleavage do they care more about what is between one's legs than what is in one's heart and mind?
