Historia
"Middle manager." The term evokes a bygone industrial era in which managers functioned like cogs in a vast machine and bureaucracy ruled. In recent decades, midlevel managers became a favorite target for the chopping block—underappreciated, often considered a superfluous layer of the organization. Not only does this outdated perspective need to change, the future demands it. In Power to the Middle, McKinsey thought leaders Bill Schaninger, Bryan Hancock, and Emily Field call for a profound reimagining of what middle managers can and must be able to do.

Not much in here
Revisado: 08-16-23
It really is a book about why you should value middle managers more - and not much else. It reads like an HBR article - more ideas and reasoning than facts and practical tools. An article may have been a more appropriate medium.
If you want language, arguments, and stories about why managers are important, it will give you that. Not much else

I fell for this book
Revisado: 02-13-23
I remember thinking “this is taking a while to get to the action.” What I didn’t know was I was falling in love with the characters - and the world. M.L. Wang wrote i story I didn’t know I wanted, and all of the sudden, i couldn’t put it down. She made real people in an epic world.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Young Fitz, the illegitimate son of the noble Prince Chivalry, is ignored by all royalty except the devious King Shrewd, who has had him tutored him in the dark arts of the assassin. He has barely survived his first, soul-shattering mission, and when he returns to the court, he is thrown headfirst into the tumult of royal life.

Plot is interesting, Main character not so much
Revisado: 09-25-21
I like these books and I will read the third. The world is unique and fantastic. The second book moves faster than the first, which I struggled with a bit. All in all it’s fun.
That said, I have felt in both books that the main character lacks any interesting character traits. He is bland. And seems to be largely someone that things happen to, rather than affects things himself. He does gain more agency as the story progresses. But never gains any… characteristic. Like a personality that makes him, him. He’s devoted to the king, loves molly, wants respect from the stable master (who is full of personality!), and… well that’s about it - his traits are defined by his devotion to others. Maybe that’s the story the author wants to tell. But I felt no humanity in it. Gave me nothing to connect to. And in the end, it bored me as a reader.

Historia
Your organization's culture is the key to its success. Strategic planning is essential. People's competencies should be measured and their weaknesses shored up. People crave feedback. These may sound like basic truths of our work lives today. But actually, they're lies. As Marcus Buckingham and Ashley Goodall show in this provocative, inspiring book, there are some big lies - distortions, faulty assumptions, wrong thinking - running through our organizational lives.

Nine Things We Don’t Know About Work
Revisado: 07-21-20
Overall, the book is worth reading, particularly if you have control over talent management systems. It’s intentionally provocative and contrarian, and it’s likely wise to be aware of alternate POVs from the systems HR and corporate use.
That said, this book does not debunk the 9 lies, it only questions them. In the end, it offers logic. A line against each lie and a line for an alternative. Not evidence. This is not a scientific book.
Some are compelling, I even agree most, but their alternatives (truths) are based on as little direct real-world evidence as the lie they questioned. Some are surprisingly theoretical, given the authors’ clear stance against theoretical design.

Built To Last, the defining management study of the 90s, showed how great companies triumph over time and how long-term sustained performance can be engineered into the DNA of an enterprise from the very beginning. But what about companies that are not born with great DNA? How can good companies, mediocre companies, even bad companies achieve enduring greatness?

Enjoyable writing, More storytelling than science
Revisado: 09-29-18
I learned from Coyle’s insight, and I enjoyed the writing. The author is clearly a gifted storyteller. My impression is that it sounds more scientific than it is. This is a tough with social science of course. Yet, I craved a stronger demonstration of scientific rigor or slightly less confidence in his conclusions. Overall would recommend.

Historia
Khaavren of the House of Tiassa is a son of landless nobility, possessor of a good sword and “tolerably well-acquainted with its use.” Along with three loyal friends, he enthusiastically seeks out danger and excitement. But in a realm renowned for repartee and betrayals, where power is as mutable as magic, a young man like Khaavren, newly come from the countryside, had best be wary. His life depends on it. And so does the future of Draegara.
