Historia
Amber Kivinen is moving to Mars. Or at least, she will be if she wins a chance to join MarsNow. She and 23 reality TV contestants from around the world—including attractive Israeli soldier Adam, endearing fellow Canadian Pichu, and an assortment of science nerds and wannabe influencers—are competing for two seats on the first human-led mission to Mars, sponsored by billionaire Geoff Task. Meanwhile Kevin, Amber’s boyfriend of 14 years, was content going nowhere until Amber left him—and their hydroponic weed business—behind.

Story about earning a spot on a Mars mission - NOT
Revisado: 10-20-23
Couldn't finish it. When I read the summary, I thought it was going to get a book about a woman fighting to earn a spot on an early Mars mission - by competing in a "Survivor-like" competition. That is not this book. This book is about the angst and temptation, mostly of the boyfriend, that happens when two somewhat committed members of a heterosexual couple are apart for a few weeks.
Life is too short to finish books like this.

Historia
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

Well-crafted story, excellent voice narration
Revisado: 01-29-23
This story is an easy listen, but the amount of detail and coverage of cultural problems makes this a thought provoking experience.
The narrator is great...maybe "Dick Hill great," because the voices of the different characters are completely natural and believable.
I'm about to move on to the next book in the "Lady Astronaut" series - right now.

In Gerrardsville, Colorado, a woman dies under the wheels of a moving bus. The death is ruled a suicide. But Jack Reacher saw what really happened: A man in a gray hoodie and jeans, moving stealthily, pushed the victim to her demise—before swiftly grabbing the dead woman’s purse and strolling away.

Might be my last Jack Reacher Download
Revisado: 11-12-22
To summarize, I'm disappointed. This Jack Reacher novel lacks the standard Jack reacher sensibility. There are too many subplots going on in this book, and some of the fight scenes involving guns are completely unbelievable in light of Reacher's "Win, no matter what" philosophy.
The current events, societal villain (that varies for each novel) never fully crystalizes, either.
I got my Reacher fix, but I'm not satisfied. I guess I'll go back and listen to Trip Wire or Make Me to fill the void.
Narration is fine, but I miss Dick Hill.

Historia
Warnings is the story of the future of national security, threatening technologies, the US economy, and possibly the fate of civilization. In Greek mythology Cassandra foresaw calamities, but was cursed by the gods to be ignored. Modern-day Cassandras clearly predicted the disasters of Katrina, Fukushima, the Great Recession, the rise of ISIS, and many more. Like the mythological Cassandra, they were ignored. There are others right now warning of impending disasters, but how do we know which warnings are likely to be right?

This audiobook really gives us something to think.
Revisado: 04-11-22
I listened over multiple weeks. The narrator is appropriately dry, for a non-fiction subject like Warnings. To try the narrator presents many plausible arguments for disaster and our overall lack of preparedness for each one. There are some pronunciation errors (science words) and a few true technical errors. (In my opinion.)
This is an enjoyable audiobook, well narrated in the appropriate manner for a nonfiction book.

Scott Brick does excellent narration, although his French and Persian characters sound very similar. The story fits current geopolitical tensions. Good character expansion.

Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

Entertaining and even inspiring at brief moments

This is an entertaining listen. The reader does an admirable job. However, the story is a little too predictable and simplistic for more than 3 stars.

Don't worry that Dick Hill didn't narrate this one
Revisado: 05-22-21
I've listened to this audiobook several times. This is great, early Jack Reacher. The narration is way better that most audiobooks. If Dick Hill wasn't the yardstick, no one would ever complain about Johnathan McClain's performance. This audiobook is well narrated.
The story is wild and full of holes. All of the Reacher stories are far fetched. That's part of the allure of it all.
If you don't consume this story, there's a gap in the history. It's worth the time.

Revisado: 05-16-21
Not a happy story, and not great literature, but the author and narrator describe the time and scenery in a thoroughly detailed manner.
This should be required reading of any American history enthusiast...any person living in Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, or Missouri...and certainly anyone involved in law enforcement or the government.

Good exposure to the topic, but somewhat outdated
Revisado: 04-25-21
This was a free download, so I can't complain much. There were a couple of mispronounced words and the details are stale, especially after the Trump administration changes and the impact of Covid-19. This was not a waste of my time, but not good enough to recommend today.

Historia
One hundred thousand years ago, at least six human species inhabited the Earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism?
