Wonderful
Revisado: 07-13-24
A great novel that becomes ever more interesting considering it is based on a real event and then fictionalized by Endo. A deep study of the clash of East and West, and ultimately, the place of Christianity in that world.

A Tale of Father's and Son's
Revisado: 06-11-24
A book that touches on the deep love between a father and a son, and the enormous sacrifice in which a father makes to bring a measure of life for his child. I can't say it will be for everyone, but The Road is one of those books that brings you to the very forefront of humanity, both its good and its evil.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Clarke's writing us exquisite and truly a gem in the modern age. I felt that I was reading a book by Dickens, yet included magic and all things fantastic. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Author of the National Book Award-winning All the Pretty Horses, Cormac McCarthy is one of the most provocative American stylists to emerge in the last century. The striking novel Blood Meridian offers an unflinching narrative of the brutality that accompanied the push west on the 1850s Texas frontier.

With Kafka on the Shore, Haruki Murakami gives us a novel every bit as ambitious and expansive as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, which has been acclaimed both here and around the world for its uncommon ambition and achievement, and whose still-growing popularity suggests that it will be read and admired for decades to come.

A weird and wonderful listen
Revisado: 01-23-24
As always, Murakami leaves many more riddles than answers. my main gripe with Kafka on the Shore, having listened to it twice now, is Kafka's story. at times I am enraptured, but other times am disgusted. Nakata and his story is by far the redeeming factor that brings me back. I still believe that The Wind Up Bird Chronicle is his best and most compelling work, but Kafka is certainly an interesting piece in Murakami's body of works.

Confused and Dissatisfied
Revisado: 01-12-24
I would call myself a great admirer of Haruki Murakami and The Wind Up Bird Chronicle is in my top ten favorite books, but 1Q84 lost me by the end. Far too much is left unsaid, even by Murakami standards. The love story seemed strung together like an overcooked noodle. The voice for Aomame was like fingers on a chalk board. By and far, I would say this is Murakami's least coherent work and is in a desperate need of an editor to shave of a good third of the book. I don't regret listening but I could never recommend a friend to read 1Q84.

I both loved and struggled with Killing Commendatore. The focus on many of sexual aspects always made me cringe and distracted me from the story.

Historia
Unknown Empire begins with a barefoot Ethiopian army defeating thousands of European soldiers in 1896. As the only African nation to never be conquered, they defeated Mussolini during WWII. With the West dying but Africa booming, Ethiopia faces population control leaders such as Bill Gates and the U.N. in an epic confrontation for the future of civilization. In all these confrontations, the ark of the covenant plays a central role for Ethiopians who believe that they have held the world's most famous object since before the time of Christ.

Historia
Gogol's great Russian classic is the Pickwick Papers of Russian literature. It takes a sharp but humorous look at life in all its strata but especially the devious complexities in Russia, with its landowners and serfs. We are introduced to Chichikov, a businessman who, in order to trick the tax authorities, buys up dead 'souls', or serfs, whose names still appear on the government census. Despite being a dealer in phantom crimes and paper ghosts, he is the most beguiling of Gogol's characters.

Historia
Rev. Dr. Stephen De Young, creator of the popular The Whole Counsel of God blog and podcast, traces the lineage of Orthodox Christianity back to the faith and witness of the apostles, which was rooted in a first-century Jewish worldview. The Religion of the Apostles presents the Orthodox Christian Church of today as a continuation of the religious life of the apostles, which in turn was a continuation of the life of the people of God since the beginning of creation.

A Must Read for Any Serious Christian
Revisado: 07-28-21
I graduated with my bachelor's degree in Apologetics and realize that I know nothing of how the early church and Judiasm functioned. This book dispels many myths and propaganda pieces that exist in Christendom. Father Stephen has written a treasure for Christians and most especially, Orthodoxy.
