Historia
As a con woman who has spent her entire life fending for herself on the streets of London, Rose Wakefield knows how to scam a gentleman out of his money without ever getting caught. That's until she knocks on the wrong earl's door and is faced with Carver Ashburn Earl of Kensworth and not the notorious rake she thinks she is approaching. Carver is a good man, but even a good man will not pass up an opportunity to escape his grief. What better way to avoid his feelings than to play into a con woman's ruse and offer to marry her?

Great story. Plodding reader.
Revisado: 08-12-24
This is an entertaining story with lots of interesting plot twists. The reader was a bit slow so I listened at 1.5x speed and it was much better. Also, the word “con” was not coined until much later in the century so its use here is not strictly accurate. Nevertheless, it’s a fun listen for those who like lots of smirks.

Historia
Jane Austen fan Amelia Bennett sneaks away from a dull tour of an English country manor, only to run into a man more dashing than Mr. Darcy himself. About to lose his ancestral home to family debts, charming aristocrat Tom Calder invites his American guest to join him in drinking his way through the estate’s priceless wine collection. But when they wake in his bed the next morning, they’re convinced that in their drunken haze they witnessed a murder. Problem is, the body has vanished and no one believes them.

An entertaining listen for Austen lovers!
Revisado: 05-25-24
As a huge Jane Austen fan, I love that Brynn Kelly set her story in England with many allusions to Austen's novels and world. But you don't have to know anything about Austen to enjoy this quirky story that is full of mystery, suspense, and fun. Some profanity and alcohol use along with mentions of sex and death/murder.

Historia
Caroline Wilton has no time for romance. She’s too busy running her family’s bar to even think about dating. She’s also one of Starfall Point’s resident witches, responsible for keeping the local ghost population in check. But even the most magical of witches can use a shoulder to lean on, which is what happens when Ben Hoult, the handsome doctor she never quite got over, walks back into her life. Ben is a single dad now, and as he and Caroline reconnect, they discover that they both have a knack for helping and protecting the people near and dear to them.

Historia
Parents send their daughters to Our Lady of the Nile to be molded into respectable citizens and to escape the dangers of the outside world. Fifteen years prior to the 1994 Rwandan genocide, we watch as these girls try on their parents’ preconceptions and attitudes, transforming the lycée into a microcosm of the country’s mounting racial tensions and violence. In the midst of the interminable rainy season, everything unfolds behind the closed doors of the school: friendship, curiosity, fear, deceit, prejudice, and persecution.

A compelling, but disturbing novel
Revisado: 08-21-23
I enjoy historical novels and read this one for my book group. I have not read much contemporary fiction about Africa but enjoyed the storytelling, even though it was such a dark topic (leading up to the Rwandan genocide).

Historia
In 1895, Utah's leading suffragist, Emmeline B. Wells, welcomed her friends Susan B. Anthony and Reverend Anna Howard Shaw to a gathering of more than 8,000 people from around the nation at the Rocky Mountain Suffrage Convention. They were there to celebrate the suffrage movement's recent wins and strategize their next triumphs. Pioneering the Vote tells the remarkable, largely unknown story of the early suffrage victories that happened in states and territories in the American West.

Interesting popular history of suffrage in the west
Revisado: 07-18-22
The storytelling mode of this book is compelling and interesting. Highly recommend for armchair historians of the west and the woman suffrage movement. A few small small annoyances, such as incorrect claims (like Lucy Stone attending the 1848 Seneca Falls convention). Another problem was the narrator’s mispronunciations of names for both people and places. (Such Weber, Zina, Deseret, and Exponent.)

Historia
Maggie Macleod was weary of life with a soul sickness that ate into every fiber of her being. In a mad way, it did not seem strange to her that she should be on her way to the high court to stand trial for the murder of her husband. Her marriage seemed to have been one long, dreary desert lit by flares of cruelty. But Maggie is innocent in the matter of her beastly husband's death, and she resolves to answer the question that plagues her: Who did murder the man?

Love Beaton’s stories! And this one with its mystery element does not disappoint.
The narrator needs some help with pronunciation of some words, especially “quay” as “key” and not “kway.”
