Interesting premise, generic characters
Revisado: 09-23-24
Stubborn and pushy female character who insists that she can protect herself (then immediately gets injured), paired with an over-protective, stuffy, and taciturn male main character.
After reading and listening to dozens of historical mystery series, I’ve grown tired of such main characters and their relationship dynamics.
There are some quirky details sprinkled here and there, but they aren’t enough to differentiate the characters from other novels in this genre.
Plotwise, this audiobook is not bad; but since the story is written in the 1st person point of view of the female protagonist, her smug and forceful personality seeps into and colors the story.
The preview of the second book (after the end credits) makes me want to listen to the next story because the mystery sounds rather interesting, but I’m not sure I will. Maybe someday … if/when the book is included in the Audible Plus catalog.

Historia
Summer, 2021. Nell has come home at her family's insistence to celebrate an anniversary. Fifty years ago, her father wrote The Golden Bones. Part picture book, part treasure hunt, Sir Frank Churcher created a fairy story about Elinore, a murdered woman whose skeleton was scattered all over England. Clues and puzzles in the pages of The Golden Bones led readers to seven sites where jewels were buried—gold and precious stones, each a different part of a skeleton. One by one, the tiny golden bones were dug up until only Elinore's pelvis remained hidden.

One of the best audiobook I’ve listened this year
Revisado: 09-16-24
Definitely not a run-off-the-mill kind of book.
I had to re-listen the first quarter of the audiobook a few times before I could really get into it; but, afterwards, once the writer finishes setting up the scene/introducing all the characters, the story is really gripping.

👎
Revisado: 08-31-24
The main plot is too similar to Lauren Weisberger’s “When Life Gives You Lululemon” while the other (unresolved) plot near the end of the story reminds me to another story I read/watched a long time ago (at the moment, I can’t remember the title).
The narrator’s high pitch tones sound a bit feline at times, and the low/whispery bit in the penultimate chapter is rathet irritating.

THAT final plot twist
Revisado: 07-03-24
Most people would never have guessed the ending.
The first few plot reveals might seem a little predictable but there is a reason for that, and you’ll find the reason in the final few chapters of the book.

Fun and hilarious
Revisado: 04-16-24
I decided to get this audiobook because - judging from the sample - it’s a fun story featuring an irreverent main character with a bit of an attitude. As usual, I read all the reviews on this page, and it made me less sure whether I would enjoy listening to this audiobook.
So, I listened to the sample a few more times then decided to get it during a 2-for-1 sale, aaaannnnddd … I do not regret getting this audiobook!
The main character is an inexperienced PI trainee. So, yes, she makes several bad decisions. Plus, her family and her client are quite outrageous. Overall, though, I like this book. It’s a fun humorous light mystery.

Historia
Summer’s looking forward to a break from hustling for acting work in Manhattan when she, her husband, Gabe, and Gabe’s nine-year-old son arrive at the annual family get-together at her in-laws’ sprawling estate. On the agenda are leisurely gourmet meals, tennis matches, and plenty of relaxation by the pool. But this year, Gabe’s brother, Nick, has invited his new flame Hannah, whom Summer immediately recognizes from a few years before. Oddly, her brother-in-law’s girlfriend claims not to know her.

Good story, harsh/grating narration
Revisado: 04-08-24
I really wanted to like the book, but I couldn’t stand the harsh/sharp whispery sounds. Nevertheless, I wanted to know how the story ends. So, by the time I reached the midpoint of the story, I decided to skip to the 3 last chapters of the audiobook.
Maybe the microphone amplifies the “s”, “sh”, “th” and “ch” sounds too much that the audio recording sounds so sharp/harsh at times. The whispery/breathy voice the performer uses (whenever she expresses sympathy, sorrow, anxiety, etc) makes the sounds even sharper.
I listened to the audiobook with a no-frill headphone, so I don’t know if adjusting a (fancier) headphone’s settings can reduce the sharpness of the sounds. I hope it does.

Pretty good story, over the top performance
Revisado: 03-20-24
Though some people seem to like the narrators’ performance, I find it irritating. I had to stop and fast forward the story several times because I find the tones of voice they use unbearably grating.

Historia
Back in college, Jane Lewis would have given anything to be like homecoming queen Connie Bryan. Instead she was just Plain Jane - overweight, frumpy, and painfully shy. That was then. Today, a lovely and confident Dr. Jane Lewis has a thriving psychotherapy practice, her own radio talk show, a beautiful old Louisiana mansion, and her affectionate, nutty dog, Olive, to keep her company. The only thing missing is someone to share her life.

There is no dropped plot; but, yes, the writing is choppy
Revisado: 06-21-23
There is a lot going on in this story, but every plot line is wrapped up very neatly and thoroughly.*
Despite the cover design, this really is a mystery/thriller book that also explores toxic parental relationships, rape, trauma, suicide, chauvinism, physical violence, unhealthy female rivalry, possible medical malpractice, etc.
There are romantic scenes sprinkled here and there, but they are too farfetched. Also, the author uses (friendly) ghosts as plot device.
The female main character’s sudden regression/personality switch is quite jarring; but maybe it makes sense. After repressing her anger, despair, and guilt for so many years, perhaps the dam finally broke.
*Note: While it’s true that the names of some of the perpetrators and the length of their prison sentences are not mentioned, the book tells us what happens to them in the end.
