Historia
Language defines us as a species, placing humans head and shoulders above even the most proficient animal communicators. But it also beguiles us with its endless mysteries, allowing us to ponder why different languages emerged, why there isn't simply a single language, how languages change over time and whether that's good or bad, and how languages die out and become extinct.

Good general overview.
Revisado: 09-25-23
This book is a great introduction to linguistic study and presents subjects in an interesting and comprehensible way.
However, I suggest a little caution with this lecturer. Particularly around Lecture 23 and 24, he presents some unsubstantiated opinions based only in his own opinion that could lead a reader astray.
I think it would have been a much better series overall had he stuck to teaching the material rather than editorializing about it.

Historia
The Queer Art of Failure is about finding alternatives - to conventional understandings of success in a heteronormative, capitalist society; to academic disciplines that confirm what is already known according to approved methods of knowing; and to cultural criticism that claims to break new ground but cleaves to conventional archives.

As others have stated, the narrator’s tone-deaf sense of entitlement and fact-dropping about her own accomplishments really made this book a hard listen; I couldn’t finish. There are much much better resources out there for those interested in mindfulness. Skip this one entirely.

Pass on this one.
Revisado: 03-15-20
These stories probably were thrilling when they were all written in 1880, but they will hold little interest for a modern audience. Only about 15% of the collection can be said to climb above irritatingly dull. The narrator also had an odd and grating style that detracted from enjoyment of the collection. Definitely avoid this one.

Good adaptation
Revisado: 08-10-19
Buyers should beware that this adaptation is more a radio play than a book; it’s not the actual Treasure Island nor that close to it.
As a radio play it was fairly good. Much of the action is confusing to listen to, and some of the plot points get lost in the confusion of having only the audible parts to piece the action together.
Wonderful voice acting, however, that really breathes new life into a classic tale. Would recommend it.

Historia
Jonathan Haidt skillfully combines two genres-philosophical wisdom and scientific research-delighting the listener with surprising insights. He explains, for example, why we have such difficulty controlling ourselves and sticking to our plans; why no achievement brings lasting happiness, yet a few changes in your life can have profound effects, and why even confirmed atheists experience spiritual elevation.

Pass this One Over
Revisado: 04-23-19
I came to this book expecting a cross-cultural analysis and critique of commonly-held wisdom regarding the pursuit of happiness / self-flourishing. This book is not that. Instead, it is a disorderly mess of vague pop psychology insights motivated at times by the author’s bent towards self-aggrandizement regarding his own research. This book provides no valuable analysis beyond easily digestible folk wisdom. Those seeking a more critical and quality examination of ideas regarding happiness and flourishing should definitely look elsewhere.

Historia
The metropolis of New Crobuzon sprawls at the center of the world. Humans and mutants and arcane races brood in the gloom beneath its chimneys, where the river is sluggish with unnatural effluent and foundries pound into the night. For a thousand years, the Parliament and its brutal militias have ruled over a vast economy of workers and artists, spies and soldiers, magicians, crooks, and junkies. Now a stranger has arrived, with a pocketful of gold and an impossible demand. And something unthinkable is released.

2.5/5

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
An unhappy book filled with unlikable, irredeemable characters. At parts utterly dull, and at others filled with greedy, gratuitous violence, this book is hardly saved by Mieville's exquisite prose.
Was Perdido Street Station worth the listening time?
At 24 hours, it's quite a length. I left the book feeling oppressed and unhappy. Listen with care.
