Historia
In the 1990s, Carter Wills was the lead singer of the English alt-rock band Mayluna, securing his place among music legends. His tortured-heart lyrics struck a chord. And so did his secret connection to a woman whose love changed all their lives. Who was she? Evie Waters’s two grown children discover an iconic photo in an old magazine of a “mystery girl” with Carter: their mother. It all started in a wistful time and place for Evie, her twenty-fifth summer.

Poor Steve
Revisado: 03-05-25
That was rough, self righteousness to the max and I just don’t get the selfishness. How was it her right to make big decisions on others behalf. Poor Steve gets scraps his entire life, being held hostage so he never got to find someone to truly love him. Evie was void of much personality but the object of enduring love by two men. I finished the book to give it a chance and to justify an honest review. Many love it and that is cool. I found myself shouting at the air throughout so thanks for the rage therapy.

Woof, this was a slog!
Revisado: 02-20-24
I have enjoyed Kristin Hannah’s novels, especially The Nightingale. This was rough, I am an empath but could not in any way feel for the main character, she is an entitled, spoiled, lazy, selfish, morally bankrupt bore. I am all for redemption arcs, but there was none for her, the last hour tries to no avail. Plus, there was some redundant and trite narrative, I found it condescending, like we the readers are dense. So, sadly I was not a fan. It is a shame as I would have welcomed much more story about Barb and Esther than Frankie. Let’s hope the next novel is more like The Great Alone.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Fun and then heartbreaking

Wow, highly recommended as it has all the qualities I love in a book. I laughed and then it broke my heart but I was better for having gone on the journey.

Historia
In this fascinating narrative, therapist Catherine Gildiner presents five of what she calls her most heroic and memorable patients. Among them: A successful, first-generation Chinese immigrant musician suffering sexual dysfunction; a young woman whose father abandoned her at age nine with her younger siblings in an isolated cottage in the depth of winter; and a glamorous workaholic whose narcissistic, negligent mother greeted her each morning of her childhood with "Good morning, Monster". Each patient presents a mystery, one that will only be unpacked over years.

Felt disingenuous, while the case studies were interesting, felt a bit exploitative. Some may benefit from this though.

So as a surprise for Debbie, and with help of his niece Emma, he has arranged for them to renew their vows in front of all their friends and family (or whoever can make it to St Pancras at very short notice on Christmas Eve).
