This story really captured the day to day grind of soldier life during colonization of the Caribbean. the protagonist’s constant struggle to survive despite the ever-changing political winds was riveting, especially to a modern reader. The daring adventures/descriptions of battles was thrilling. David Engel’s deft performance gave life to so many characters; I particularly appreciated his knack for accents! The author may have chosen to repeat himself with multiple descriptions of the heat and the flies; but by the end of the book I found it almost comical. Overall, a good read on my commute!

I’m new to audiobooks, and not a real fan of horror, but this book was a good balance of silly, scary, and macabre humor shakespeare. A purist of the Bard may think it blasphemous, but I appreciated the fresh take on the summer play. Carrie Brewer’s storytelling skills are on point, with hilarious characterizations- she did such a great job of bringing so many characters to life. Some of the author’s metaphors don’t stand the test of time, so I got lost on a few of the references- but overall, a lovely listen for a long summer drive!
