Historia
Òdòdó's hometown of Timbuktu has been conquered by the warrior king of Yorùbáland. Already shunned as social pariahs, living conditions for Òdòdó and the other women in her blacksmith guild grow even worse under Yorùbá rule. Then Òdòdó is abducted. She is whisked across the Sahara to the capital city of Ṣàngótẹ̀, where she is shocked to discover that her kidnapper is none other than the vagrant who had visited her guild just days prior. But now that he is swathed in riches rather than rags, Òdòdó realizes he is not a vagrant at all.

Like poetry
Revisado: 02-09-25
This book was like poetry. The words were beautiful. So illustrative. The narrator had a voice like a song. I enjoyed this book very, very much.

Good story, audio needs some editing
Revisado: 01-25-25
The story was good, but the audio could have used some more editing. There were probably a dozen times throughout the audiobook in which phrases were repeated - the editors forgot to cut out duplicate audio. It was distracting and disappointing. The story itself was engaging, though.

Story and narration great - editing is lacking
Revisado: 04-17-22
I have listened to the other books in this series and loved them! I loved the story line of this one, but there is something wrong with the editing. When they trimmed and pieced together the recording, they left gaps just a smidge too long - maybe and extra second or two. This results in odd pauses in conversations or narratives, leading me to pull out my phone and figure out if it paused accidentally (it did not).
Please clean up these odd pauses for future listeners and it will be wonderful!

Historia
Nameless, Kentucky, in 1969 is a hardscrabble community where jobs are few and poverty is a simple fact - just like the hot Appalachian breeze or the pests that can wipe out a tobacco field in days. RubyLyn Bishop is luckier than some. Her God-fearing uncle, Gunnar, has a short fuse and high expectations, but he's given her a good home ever since she was orphaned at the age of five. Yet now, a month shy of her 16th birthday, RubyLyn itches for more.

Great story, odd editing
Revisado: 09-19-21
I really enjoyed the story. I loved the narrator's scratchy voice, but would be jarred when there were parts of sentences that were edited in that sounded completely different (like she had tons of tea and soothed her throat). It was distracting when it occurred.

Historia
With war looming dangerously close, Ilse’s school days soon turn to lessons of survival. In the harshness of winter, her family must join the largest exodus in human history to survive. As battle lines are drawn and East Prussia’s borders vanish beneath them, they leave their farm and all they know behind for an uncertain future. But Ilse also has Janusz, her family’s young Polish laborer, by her side. As they flee from the Soviet army, his enchanting folktales keep her mind off the cold, the hunger, and the horrors unfolding around them.

Absolutely fantastic.
Revisado: 07-31-21
Easy to listen to, hard to hear. The beautiful imagery and intense story lines tell the story of the second world war from unique perspectives.
In my opinion, it was incredible.
I definitely recommend doing the audio version - it brings to life the characters, but also helps with the German/Polish/Russian phrases sprinkled in there.
