A great series
Revisado: 04-26-25
This is a fun series. I think I enjoyed these later books more in print because I could skip over the long winded pointless bits. Still way better than many fantasy books out there.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Poetic, if occasionally long winded
Revisado: 09-15-24
It took awhile but enjoyed the story once it got rolling. A lot of race and class observations intelligently expressed.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

The octopus, of course.

Such a lovely tale. Predictable and yet sometimes maddening, in a good way. Two great characters who are easy to love.

Such a timely book. Today building and keeping a strong workforce is a huge challenge and many leaders are ill-equipped to meet the challenge. This book is perfect for the commute to work. It is science-based and provides practical advice for improving culture where you work. It’s an easy listen but packs a punch.
