Historia
When Nancy Friday began her research for My Mother/My Self in the early 1970s no work existed that explored the unique interaction between mother and daughter. Today psychotherapists throughout the world acknowledge that if women are to be able to love without possessing, to find work that fulfills them, and to discover their full sexuality, they must first acknowledge their identity as separate from their mother’s. Nancy Friday’s book played a major role in that acceptance.

Blameful and victim-oriented
Revisado: 05-28-22
I really wanted to learn from this book. The mother-daughter relationship is complicated, and as a woman with both an elderly mother and a young daughter, I was hoping to get useful insights and perspectives that could benefit all of us. Alas, the author seems unwilling to take any responsibility for her own life, and keeps blaming «Mother» (it’s often unclear whether this refers to her own mother or the more archetypal mother in general) for everything from her own perspectives and life-choices, to feelings of self-worth and how she relates to her own vagina(!) The theory is dated, and the book seems full of fatalistic perspectives: If your mother (or you, as a mother) wasn’t perfect in the first 1-2 years of your life, you’re doomed to be fucked-up forever and locked into perpetual victimhood. I gave the book several chances to develop into something else, and maybe it gets better, but with 6 hours of listening I just can’t finish the remaining 11 hours of this blame-fest. I gave the performance 2 stars only because the whiny reading seems to correlate with and emphasize the story.

In fact, it is the life that mystics have chosen throughout history, and only one thing is required: the willingness to completely surrender to divine instruction. Now Caroline Myss and Dr. Estes - two of the country's leading intuitives and bestselling authors - are together for the first time on audio with Intuition and the Mystical Life.

Nope
Revisado: 05-02-21
I love Dr Estes, and was curious about Caroline Myss, whom I don’t know much about. After listening to this, I’m not curious anymore. Nobody can be to everybody’s taste, and Myss was definitely not to my taste. She came across as judgemental and self-aggrandizing, in stark contrast to Dr Estes’ inclusivity. Not at all what I would expect of a spiritual teacher.

This is the second edition of a uniquely empowering, international word-of-mouth best seller about wild landscapes, female mythology, and the challenges facing modern women. It is a book for any woman who has ever lost her way and who sees a wasteland at the heart of modern existence and longs to live a more authentic, rooted life once again.

Decent narrator cannot save this
Revisado: 04-18-17
The writing was bad, the characters were not credible (grown men playing 'Never have I ever'?), and their inner life/inner dialogue was about as interesting to follow as it is watching paint dry. Couldn't finish it.

Historia
The only thing in Colin Mulligan's life that makes sense is taking cars apart and putting them back together. In the auto shop where he works with his father and brothers, he tries to get through the day without having a panic attack or flying into a rage. Drinking helps. So does running and lifting weights until he can hardly stand. But none of it can change the fact that he's gay, a secret he has kept from everyone.

Impressive
Revisado: 03-25-17
It takes a good storyteller to make a character like Colin likeable. He was awful in book one of the series, and I was surprised he was the author's pick for MC in this one. He is driven by self-hatred, and seen from the outside he often comes across as both mean and pathetic. Still, I enjoyed the story, which built his character really nicely. Of, and it's a really romantic story about the transformative power of love. And hot sex.

The weakest in the series so far
Revisado: 03-25-17
I had really looked forward to Leo's and Will's story, and loved the previous books in the series. Unfortunately, I struggled a bit with the characters in this one. I couldn't quite relate to Leo, and Will just didn't seem believable. Still I give it 3 stars because I like Parrish's writing style, her sense for detail and because I enjoy the world she has created in the Middle of Somewhere series.

Daniel Mulligan is tough, snarky, and tattooed, hiding his self-consciousness behind sarcasm. Daniel has never fit in - not at home in Philadelphia with his auto mechanic father and brothers, and not at school where his Ivy League classmates looked down on him. Now, Daniel's relieved to have a job at a small college in Holiday, Northern Michigan, but he's a city boy through and through, and it's clear that this small town is one more place he won't fit in.

New favourite in the genre
Revisado: 03-19-17
Slightly angsty, but also hopeful story about two very likeable people who have both been bruised by life. On the surface they seem to be mismatched, but each turns out to be the catalyst the other needs to start living fully. Good writing, with particular attention to detail that really makes the story and the characters come alive. Loved the cultural references and the humour. A character-driven story that also gives supporting characters enough layers to make them interesting. Looking forward to the next one in the series!

Awful.
Revisado: 03-13-17
Couldn't finish it, and returned it after 4 chapters. Bad writing, bad dialogue, unbelievable characters. Seems to be written by a woman who never met a man and therefore just fantasizes about how men 'work'. The character Lane is supposed to be 20 years old, but is so innocent, spontaneous and quirky, he seems more like he's 13. His romantic partner is 32. If a love story between a 32 year old man and a puppy is your thing, you might like it. Otherwise, there are way better mm romances out there. The narrator has my sympathies; he had to finish it. I hope he was well paid.

Historia
A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Imbuing the world with magic!
Revisado: 08-28-13
Who was your favorite character and why?
Lettie Hempstock. Because she has been eleven years old for a very long time.
What about Neil Gaiman’s performance did you like?
It's perfect. Very pleasant voice, and since he's the author, he knows exactly how to present his story to the listener.
Who was the most memorable character of The Ocean at the End of the Lane and why?
The Hempstock Women; I can't really separate them, because they're essentially three aspects of the same character. They set the story in motion and see our hero through his dangerous journey.
Any additional comments?
Neil Gaiman contnues to animate the world with his stories.

Historia
"Buy my stepfather's ghost, read the e-mail." So Jude did. He bought it, in the shape of the dead man's suit, delivered in a heart-shaped box, because he wanted it - because his fans ate up that kind of story. It was perfect for his collection: the genuine skulls and the bones, the real honest-to-God snuff movie, the occult books, and all the rest of the paraphernalia that goes along with his kind of hard/goth rock.

Joe Hill got a new fan!
Revisado: 05-15-13
Where does Heart-Shaped Box rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Top 5.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Heart-Shaped Box?
The first description of the ghost.
Which character – as performed by Stephen Lang – was your favorite?
Jude. He's not your typical nice guy, but he is believably human with his flaws.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
The dead drag the living down.
Any additional comments?
I loved the book; both the story and the performance. An unbelievable story is made believable by the author's fine attention to detail and descriptive abilites. After I finished the book, I immediately purchased and started listening to Joe Hill's 'Horns'. I'm officially a fan!
