Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

The Smell of Moscow
Revisado: 12-25-16
An amazing recreation of the feel and atmosphere of soviet Moscow. The history begins around the time of the bolshevik revolution and takes us through the cold war. I recommend reading it along with True Believer: Stalin's Last American Spy. "Gentleman" is a work of historical fiction and "True Beliver" is a non-fiction by Katie Marton. Read together they give you dynamic, insight into the era.

Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. The working people riot, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded, he begins to rise in the world, even as the House of Hwang falls.

another time and place
Revisado: 02-04-13
I first read The Good Earth when I was in 8th or 9th grade. I loved it then and I wanted to see how I felt about it now. It was great. I still loved being zoomed across the continents and time for a peek into another culture and time in history. Pearl Buck's experiences in China are distilled in her character development.
The narrator brought the characters to life.

Into another world
Revisado: 05-29-12
What I love about this whole series is the way it colors a culture with native nuances and viewpoint while at the same time weaving a wonderful murder mystery tale.

Historia
The world is on the brink of disaster. Iran has just conducted its first atomic weapons test. Millions of Muslims around the world are convinced their messiah — known as the Twelfth Imam — has arrived on earth. Israeli leaders fear Tehran, under the Twelfth Imam’s spell, will soon launch a nuclear attack that could bring about a second Holocaust and the annihilation of Israel.

Too much religion
Revisado: 11-15-11
This book in some ways was actually prescient. However, too much religion. It preached and preached and preached. It was unfortunate that it overwelmed a potentially good story.
