Michael Palin brings the fascinating story of the Erebus and its occupants to life, from its construction as a bomb vessel in 1826 through the flagship years of James Clark Ross’s Antarctic expedition and finally to Sir John Franklin’s quest for the holy grail of navigation - a route through the Northwest Passage, where the ship disappeared into the depths of the sea for more than 150 years. It was rediscovered under the arctic waters in 2014.

Revisado: 04-21-25
This story points out how one man trying to resurrect his flagging reputation by taking on an almost unwinnable journey to find the Northwest Passage. He puts together an expedition, well equipped with supplies but lacking in abilities of the leader & his decisions. His hubris was what led to his massive failure to recognize his shortcomings.

Historia
The Mississippi River, known as “America’s River” and Mark Twain are practically synonymous in American culture. The popularity of Twain’s steamboat and steamboat pilot on the ever-changing Mississippi has endured for over a century. A brilliant amalgam of remembrance and reportage, by turns satiric, celebratory, nostalgic, and melancholy, Life on the Mississippi evokes the great river that Mark Twain knew as a boy and young man and the one he revisited as a mature and successful author.

History Delivered First Hand
Revisado: 08-31-24
Samuel Clemens lived this history & had the foolish idea that he could capture it & write about with alacrity. How right he was. He was able to portray a swath of the United States in all of its glory & shortcomings & delineated its place in history with a truthfulness that is refreshing.

Historia
“Homecoming” takes us back to Ford County, the fictional setting of many of John Grisham’s unforgettable stories. Jake Brigance is back, but he’s not in the courtroom. He’s called upon to help an old friend, Mack Stafford, a former lawyer in Clanton, who three years earlier became a local legend when he stole money from his clients, divorced his wife, filed for bankruptcy, and left his family in the middle of the night, never to be heard from again—until now. Now Mack is back, and he’s leaning on his old pals, Jake and Harry Rex, to help him return. His homecoming does not go as planned.

Crime doesn't pay
Revisado: 07-03-24
These stories were fictional but probably based on semi true stories. Grisham wove them into an interesting premise on how devious lawyers can attempt to subvert the law by treating it as a game. A game that has no winners only suckers.

Disinformation is designed to evoke a strong emotional response to push us toward more extreme views, unable to find common ground with others. The false claims that led to the breathtaking attack on our Capitol in 2020 may have been only a dress rehearsal. Attack from Within shows us how to prevent it from happening again, thus preserving our country's hard-won democracy.

Revisado: 08-19-23
This book is an enthralling history of covert activities that shaped our recent history. Mr. Vickers not only had a ring side seat to history, he helped shape it as well. The stories were presented without bragging but with in depth reflection & acclimation to those who were also involved with him.

The Basis of Christianity Is Under Scrutiny
Revisado: 07-04-23
Religion has become more than an opiate of the masses. In the recent past, proselytizing has become more than the norm as people are now using religion as a cudgel against anyone who does not subscribe to their views. Church leaders are encouraging their flocks to become more vigilant in challenging non believers. This book proposes that at least one religion, Christianity is based on a story that was well prepared & rehearsed to fleece the flock. A person named Jesus probably existed but probably didn't expire as was foretold & may have had an offspring. Although, this is conjecture, the way that the adherents have sculpted the narrative of their supporting documentation to fit the picture they want to portray about the so-called veracity of the spirituality they subscribe to to uphold their truths.

What Little We Know But They Know
Revisado: 07-04-23
This book exposes the nefarious spying that is being fomented by people who think they are safeguarding society. Paranoia has driven software developers to design programs that can extract data from unsuspecting targets with a level of stealth that is very hard to detect. Then the spies will use it to punish the so-called enemies of the state with imprisonment or death. We need to be more vigiliant.

A New Look At Barcelona
Revisado: 07-04-23
This was an intriguing read about a city that has always had a vibrant independence. I fell in love with Barcelona in 1970 when I stayed here and learned about it's desire to remain free from corruption spurred by dictatorial rule. This book reinforces that spirit and shines a light on the people who fight the corruption.
