This book was a crazy, intense, edge of the chair, wild ride. Carlton caught my attention from the first page and kept it through the last. Warning: This book ends on an enormous cliffhanger. Do yourself a favor and save time. Purchase both books and have Book 2 (Hunting Adeline) downloaded and ready to go.

Kudos to the narrators. You two were brilliant!

I’m a fan of Corinne Michaels now. This is the first of her books I’ve ever read but I’ll be reading them all now! When an author shocks me, I’m an instant fan. I. Was. Shocked.

It is 12 days until my 39th birthday. I did a little math today and figured out that I’ve read 25-30 books per year since I fell in love with reading at the age of 12. That is roughly 750 books in 27 years. Spare is the best book I’ve had the privilege of reading. It is beautifully written and overwhelmingly poignant. Price Harry opens up fully about his mother, his military service, his relationships with his grandmother, father, and brother, his wife, their children, and their fight for freedom from the cruelty strict confines of “the institution” into which he was born. There are far too many things that moved me to go into each and every one individually but I will talk about a couple. As a woman who has buried a stillborn child, hearing him talk about the loss of their child was particularly moving and was one of many moments that brought me to tears. I laughed out loud as he spoke of being frostbitten in a place no man wants to be frostbitten. His thoughts on the number of seemingly insurmountable losses he has suffered throughout his life is so painfully relatable, as are his and the duchesses struggles with mental health, suicidal ideations, and their journey to healing. Overall, I would give this book 10 stars if I could. Since that is not possible, I will leave these ten stars here and head back to the beginning and listen all over again! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

From a young age books became my world. My parents never cared what I read. I read everything from The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux to Sweet Valley High/University by Frances Pascal to Les Miserable by Victor Hugo to The Ugly Duckling by Iris Johansson to To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee to Remember Me by Mary Higgins Clark to the Fear Street Series by R.L. Stine. As an adult, especially when I became a librarian, my literary word expanded far past anything I could imagine. The first time I read Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, my world turned upside down, as avid readers will know, with the thrill of a book series you wish you could forget just to turn around and read it for the first time again. This book combines the excitement of time travel with the murder mystery of novels set in current time and does it beautifully. Julie McElwain presents a captivating 19th century English countryside mystery that keeps you holding on until the last second. I read this book when it first came out. I found it on Audible a couple of days ago and decided to experience it in this format especially when I learned that the series continued past book three. I’m looking forward to listening to the entire series this week! Lucy Rayner, your narration is fantastic. You bring McElwain’s world to life!

Don’t worry! No spoilers here! Helen, Helen, Helen... WHY must you do this to me?!?! I’m in a love hate relationship with Brad and Daphne’s story! Side note 1: I always wait until release day of the third book in each trilogy. On that glorious day I buy all three and dive in. The cliffhangers are too fantastic to read one book at a time. I am in the middle of Legacy and it is driving me crazy! Side note 2: Honestly, though I enjoyed Marge and Bryce’s story, and was very glad to see them both happy, I wasn’t as connected to them as I was the stories of Talon, Joe, and Ryan. Not sure why and, like I said, I did really enjoy their trilogy. I believe that made me worry I wouldn’t connect with Brad and Daphne. Non storyline related spoiler alert: I was wrong! So very wrong! All I can do is cry and cry and cry because I’m so I love with Brad and Daphne. Especially Daphne. Knowing how it all ends... Helen, you’ve written her POV in such a way that I feel like I identify with her on all levels, even though she and I seemed to have nothing in common other than our undying love for our children. We have so very much in common. The mental health aspects of this book touch me in so many ways. I can’t even explain how touching her story is for me. Then Brad’s POV of her... Wow. Just wow. We knew he loved her at all costs but to see how that love was born... I don’t want it to end because I know how it will end. Every single one of your books is so masterfully written but these are on an entirely new level. I just wanted to thank you for this beautiful story that has me more engrossed and enchanted than when I read Twilight (Yep. I was one of those girls and proud of it!!) and Outlander for the first time. Thank you Helen! I’m totally captivated!

Sure wish the Crossfire series would be made into a HBO or Netflix show. It would be amazing
