Fun!
Revisado: 07-28-24
I listened to this in its entirety on a long road trip. The story was so engrossing I nearly ran out of fuel at one point! It is fairly clean (no sex), fast paced, not really much cyber tech, and has a great ending too. There were a few places where the story turns a completely different way than I expected and I loved that. With regards to performance, I didnt understand why the different narrators were necessary and there was one British accent that I didn't appreciate and it seemed like one character had two different accents. But, it wasnt off putting too much. I can see this as a movie. I totally recommend this book!

Couldn't Finish
Revisado: 02-27-22
I think I got 1/3 in and hoped it would get better. It was boring, narrator had a terrible voice and the aussie accent, I'm sure it was a real accent, made it so I couldn't tell which character was speaking, and I couldn't keep track of the kids. None of the characters were likeable. I'd return it if I could.

Depressing
Revisado: 11-09-19
I made it 3 hours in and gave up. It was so depressing and there was no reprieve. I generally do like the author and narrator, just not this time.

Very Juvenile
Revisado: 04-04-19
I couldn't finish the last half. I found the book hard to return to each time i stopped listening. Maybe it was the narrator as the voices were silly sounding, but the prose and storyline were so childish that it wasn't even cute or fun. I hope it get's better than the first 4 hours.

I could see this as a fun film!
Revisado: 03-06-19
There were several subplots going at the same time, it was also easy to keep track of them! I liked the story, the narrator was fantastic with the voices, and I could see this as an enjoyable movie. I learned some about the magician's code, poker playing, and how dangerous a playing card can be. I recommend.

Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. It is Longgggg!
Revisado: 11-07-18
There were a couple of times that I was about to jump to the end. If I had, I would've been really disappointed. The reason being I didn't actually 'get' the ending. The story line kept me interested during my commute to work and back - except when I wanted to fast forward. I did enjoy the book, but it was way too long and I didn't really get much out of it. It isn't a book I want to rave about with others, and it was easy to move onto the next book in my library.

It has ties to Virgin River!!
Revisado: 10-23-18
It’s about Walt, the biker guy that likes Preacher’s cooking. I love the cadence of Ms Carr’s writing. I could listen to her books forever. They are all about common events invoking complex emotions. The narrator wasn’t good with differentiating voices, but it wasn’t difficult to figure out who was talking. Yes, a few times I did have to go back to the beginning of the chapter if I couldn’t tell whose chapter it was. I think I’m running out of Robyn Carr’s books, and I’m getting nervous! Love them.

Historia
When Betty MacDonald married a marine and moved to a small chicken farm on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, she was largely unprepared for the rigors of life in the wild. With no running water, no electricity, a house in need of constant repair, and days that ran from four in the morning to nine at night, the MacDonalds had barely a moment to put their feet up and relax. And then came the children. Yet through every trial and pitfall - through chaos and catastrophe - this indomitable family somehow, mercifully, never lost its sense of humor.

Textural Writing!
Revisado: 08-05-18
To be honest, I only made it through 4 hours. The prose was fantastic and rich. I've never read anything like it. Everything had a life and personality: mountains, trees, even the stove. This made the story SUPER alive, and there were several parts that were Laugh-Out-Loud funny, and the people she encountered were made out to be unusual. However, this was written in the 1940's and the writing style was readable (thank goodness), but there were no ups and downs to keep it interesting for me. All was on an even keel, and it became tedious with all of the grueling work one did in a rural area in those days. EVERYTHING was described, not in so much detail, but it was outlined in the book. I recommend trying the book because the writing style is so unusual. Her descriptions of sunrises and the mountain's behavior towards them, the fir trees bullying the fruit trees in the orchard, and the town's personality are amazing!
