Historia
In 1980, a freshman congressman was gunned down in Rhode Island, sending shockwaves through Washington that are still reverberating over four decades later. Now, with the world on the brink of war and a weakened United States facing rampant inflation, political division, and shocking assassinations, a secret cabal of global elites is ready to assume control. And with the world’s most dangerous man locked in solitary confinement, the conspirators believe the final obstacle to complete domination has been eliminated. They’re wrong.

A white-knuckle ride to the end
Revisado: 05-26-23
Only The Dead didn’t merely hold my attention, it grabbed it in a strangle hold and wouldn’t let go until I finished the last chapter. Masterful story arc and character development. Jack Carr really takes you inside the mind of his characters.
Definitely the most brutal of the series. But not in a way that glorifies violence for violence’s sake. Everything is purposeful.
The story could have been taken from the pages of current news headlines. Which is part of why I wanted to see where he was going with the story. It didn’t disappoint.
But allow me a warning: don’t begin unless you have set aside some solid time. You’ll have trouble putting it down once you crack the first page.

Historia
Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times best sellers including Talking to Strangers and host of the podcast Revisionist History, uses original interviews, archival footage, and his trademark insight to weave together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in Central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard. As listeners hear these stories unfurl, Gladwell examines one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history.

Excellent story - but unnecessary flourishing touches

I thoroughly enjoyed the subject material. It was engaging and thought-provoking. But… it felt like a 4 hour audiobook that was lengthened to a 5 hour audio book with long pauses and musical interludes. Even playing it at a faster speed, the pauses seemed very long. I prefer to just have the content of the book without the airplane sounds and other stuff. I’d still read it again though. It’s still a 5 star story.

Reads like a crime novel... but it’s real.

As a father of a young daughter, this account cut me to the heart. If you are a patent, READ THIS BOOK. It opened my eyes to the reality of sexual abuse. Now I know how to better protect my children. Now I know how abuse can happen literally right in front of a watching parent, without raising any suspicion. Now I know a little bit more about how to draw out a child if (God-forbid) I suspect something has been done to them. And lastly, now I have a glimpse into the lonely world of a sexual assault survivor. Visceral. Raw. Real. This book has changed the way I view the world.
As William Wilberforce said, “Having heard all of this, you may choose to look the other way, but you can never say you did not know.”
Rachael, thank you for sharing your story with us.
