Historia
They might be our best friends, but we often have no idea what they are thinking. Peer inside the fascinating world of the mind of the dog with associate professor of psychology Ellen Furlong of Illinois Wesleyan University. Ever wonder how the same nose that always manages to find the worst-smelling place in the park to roll around can also be trained to sniff out cancer, bombs, and even endangered plants and animals? As you embark on a penetrating look at the canine brain, you’ll break down the unique ways dogs think and feel.

Six stars out of five.
Revisado: 08-20-23
This is one of the higher quality dog books I’ve listened to or read. Dr. Furlong is clearly an expert. She has a systematic and scientific approach to the material, and with all the info she packs into each lecture, you’d expect it get get quite dry (like many titles in the Great Courses catalogue do) or even boring. But she’s an engaging speaker! And she makes all of the details both interesting and entertaining.
Strong recommend for anyone curious about the inner workings of canines or animal cognition in general.

fascinating
Revisado: 07-23-22
this is a good book. it’s about what you think it’s about — i.e., the origins of dog domestication — but it’s also about human prehistory and migrations. (the author argues they go hand-in-hand.)
***but there’s one flag for potential listeners***: the writing is _very_ academic. it doesn’t flow like a typical dog book. there’s a strong lit review component, which, if you’re into it, is great, but it might not be for everyone.

Historia
Wendell Newman, a young ranch hand in Montana, has recently lost his mother, leaving him an orphan. His bank account holds less than $100, and he owes back taxes on what remains of the land his parents owned, as well as money for the surgeries that failed to save his mother's life. An unexpected deliverance arrives in the form of seven-year-old Rowdy Burns, the mute and traumatized son of Wendell's incarcerated cousin. When Rowdy is put under his care, what begins as an ordeal for Wendell turns into a powerful bond as he comes to love the boy more than he ever thought possible.

thumbs up

there are some obvious similarities between this book and fourth of july creek. if that sort of thing bugs you, relax. this is a compelling piece of fiction. it’s its own thing and it has a lot to say. it’d be a great use of a credit for fans of suspense novels, westerns, or literary fiction (not to mention the socio-anthropology crowd).

Outstanding literary western
Revisado: 05-02-18
Make no mistake about it: Black Hills is a literary western — and it’s really quite good.
Simmons clearly did his homework before writing this thing, and he packed loads of his research into this book (most impressively, his mastering of the Lakota language). Regarding the story, it’s highly neat and pretty innovative. AND the narration is great. Can’t lose.

Historia
After trying to help Benjamin Pearl, an undernourished, nearly feral 11-year-old boy living in the Montana wilderness, social worker Pete Snow comes face-to-face with the boy's profoundly disturbed father, Jeremiah. With courage and caution, Pete slowly earns a measure of trust from this paranoid survivalist itching for a final conflict that will signal the coming End Times. But as Pete's own family spins out of control, Pearl's activities spark the full-blown interest of the FBI, putting Pete at the center of a massive manhunt from which no one will emerge unscathed.

Not enough stars
Revisado: 09-25-17
Fourth of July Creek is the real deal. It deserves more than five stars. The story, the writing, the performance -- tremendous all around.
