It wasn’t my cup of tea!
Revisado: 10-23-22
‘Betrayal’ by Kerry Kaya is my first experience with the ‘gangland’ genre and although recommended by a friend, who thought it would be right up my alley, I’m not that sure after closing this book.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a smooth read and the author really paints a picture when it comes to tough, rough blokes and the whole gangland world, but I don’t know.
I’m probably not the woman who wants to know the culprit even before the murder actually takes place.
Also the reason why was very obvious and although the main characters still need to figure everything out, there were no real surprises on the way.
However, I must say that the book certainly lives up to it’s title as it all about betrayal and how people in that kind of world react on it, with a lot of ‘fucks’ and fists! 😉
So I believe it’s fair to say the author knows how to write, and because of that other readers will definitely enjoy this fast paced story, but unfortunately it wasn’t my cup of tea.
Narrator : The voice didn't do it for me either! Sorry.

It's Richard!
Revisado: 02-01-21
He's great as an actor, but I truly love him for his voice. I can keep on listening to Richard for hours!
So, for me, this is a lovely behind the scenes / behind the voice interview.
Couple of great book recommendations too.
Definitely worth listening to, also to get a feeling if his voice is right for you.

What a great voice Dan Stevens has!
Revisado: 06-17-19
I don't think Agatha Christie or Hercule Poirot need a lot of introduction.
I believe I was about 12 when I first read one of her mysteries, without Poirot I'm afraid, but from then on I knew this was 'my genre'.
Afterwards I soon started to read the more hard-boiled detective and mystery books, but I always returned to Agatha Christie now and then.
I read almost every book in Dutch (my mother tongue), a few in other languages and saw a lot of series and plays.
David Suchet will forever be the best Poirot in my opinion.
Although I must be honest and say there are some great performances of 'Murder on the Orient Express' without him too.
Not the latest film however!
Anyway, I'm reviewing the audiobook now, not the other genres.
As I'm fairly new to the audio version of books I thought I would go with a book I almost know by heart.
Not to bore myself, but because I thought it wouldn't be that bad if I didn't understand the narrator that well.
I would be able to follow...
I needn't to be worried one bit!
What a great voice Dan Stevens has!
Quite the performance I must admit.
I immediately fell in love with everything.
The way he just read the things, the way he was Poirot or all the others.
He even got me smirking with most of the voices he did.
They were so spot on!
I even heard little comments build in by Agatha on her worldviews I've missed all those times reading or seeing the story!
Needless to say I was captivated.
David Suchet needs to watch out, because I'm having second thoughts about him being my favorite Poirot!
I definitely will be putting other audiobooks read by Dan Stevens on my list, Agatha Christie or not.
I had a blast and will be recommending this book/the narrator to everyone.

OK plot/idea, execution not so
Revisado: 06-14-19
‘An American Family’ is my first English audiobook, so I’m not sure how to properly review one.
I believe I need to say something about the book itself and about the narrator.
Preferably separately I think, but I’m afraid that the way it’s read will always affect the overall feeling at the end of the book.
I’m fairly certain that this is the case now!
I definitely didn’t like the narrative.
In my opinion he just read it very plainly/monotonously and the voices he did were just not of my liking at all. (Women don’t have such squeaky voices!)
It was hard to hear on normal speed, so I went up till 2.0x.
I guess that would be rather quick with a more enjoyable voice, but now I just needed to get trough.
And that’s in my opinion a real shame as it does the author, who works his ass off to create a story, no good!
This said however, I guess I would be having difficulties with reading this on my own too.
I suspected a more dramatic and insightful story about a household who falls into having a victim to a serial killer in the family, but this was really too much drama for my tasting.
There are few chapters about the police/FBI investigation while the book is marked as a mystery/thriller on Audible.
The ones that are there are not worthy of the genre to me I’m afraid.
And then there are all those chapters on Isaac, a man I truly don’t like.
He lacks a proper backbone and if he’s meant to be funny I’m afraid I don’t get it.
Then there’s the way the conversations are build up, I don’t know, but even a teenager in love doesn’t make me gag as often.
I’m really sorry for being so negative and I guess you’re all wondering why I finished the book?!
I guess it’s because somehow it overall intrigued me.
The beginning itself was great, an interesting way to start a mystery/thriller and everything sounded fairly realistic.
Along the way however I started to find things weird, too coincidentally perhaps?
I can’t really put my finger on it, but I wish the ending we have in this book came faster and the other book was made as a second part in this one.
I can’t honestly not say if I’ll be able to hear the second book out with that voice, but somehow I want to, because I want to know how everything will come together in the end.
So maybe the plot/the idea itself wasn’t that bad after all, maybe it’s the execution, from both author and narrator I’m afraid, which could be a lot better?!
I’m not really sure.
I’m deeply sorry for the author as he definitely put his own ideas and visions (Perhaps also experiences?) on different social themes in this book.
You see, or hear in this case, a passion to bring these topics up for discussion.
For that alone I would recommend this book, as there shouldn’t be any shame longer around them!
