Historia
The year is 1970. Emma Gable, a blind teenager coming of age in a small industrial town in Western New York, is about as far from the seismic cultural transformations rocking campuses and city streets across America as a person can get. Emma escapes the chaos of her dysfunctional family by dialing up random numbers on the phone in her bedroom, just to see who'll answer.

Christian Slater ruined it
Revisado: 10-22-20
Christian Slater made this nearly unlistenable in how terribly overacted he read his character's part.

Historia
In the spring of 1903, the 311, known to locals as “The Majestic”, carried more than 100 passengers on board toward a tunnel mouth that would allow the 13-car locomotive to pass safely through the underbelly of the Canadian Rockies. The tunnel swallowed the 311 whole, and the train - and everyone on it - were never seen again.

Tedious
Revisado: 08-28-20
This book was an unenjoyable chore to finish. I liked the Mountain Man series, I'm a big fan of scifi, and RC could make a phone book easy to listen to...but this book was a disjointed mess. If there was a plot, I missed it. The author just threw random oddities at a group of 1800's train robbers who acted like it wasn't anything that out of the ordinary. Skip this book.

All they can do is try to bring a few thousand people to safety, before vicious aliens arrive to destroy humanity's home world. No. There is one other thing they can do: hit the enemy so hard that the aliens will regret they ever heard of humans.

Includes plenty of pew-pew-pew, original sound composition, and maybe some singing by R.C. Bray.

No, no, no!
Revisado: 06-21-19
So how'd this idea come about? Someone must have said "How could we completely ruin a hugely popular series that is currently narrated by one of the most popular narrators?" Answer: replace R.C. Bray for most of the characters, add a bunch of annoying and distracting sound effects, oh, and add a terrible echo effect to the few parts still narrated by R.C! This was a terrible idea. Don't do it again!

Historia
Between 1961 and 1967 the United States Air Force buried 1,000 Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles in pastures across the Great Plains. The Missile Next Door tells the story of how rural Americans of all political stripes were drafted to fight the Cold War by living with nuclear missiles in their backyards - and what that story tells us about enduring political divides and the persistence of defense spending. By scattering the missiles in out-of-the-way places, the Defense Department kept the chilling calculus of Cold War nuclear strategy out of view.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Historia
John Paul Jones is more than a great sea story. Jones is a character for the ages. John Adams called him the "most ambitious and intriguing officer in the American Navy." The renewed interest in the Founding Fathers reminds us of the great men who made this country, but John Paul Jones teaches us that it took fighters as well as thinkers, men driven by dreams of personal glory as well as high-minded principle to break free of the past and start a new world. Jones' spirit was classically American.

Poor recording quality

Enjoyed the story but found the recording irritating to listen to because the performer was sitting in a squeaking chair! There are also a few insurances where I could hear other voices talking in the background.

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Unnecessarily dramatic, ridiculous comparisons in the text magnified by exaggerated emotions of narrator. The story is fragmented and out of order with occasional pointless reflections about unrelated modern events.

Historia
In the span of five violent hours on August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed major Gulf Coast cities and flattened 150 miles of coastline. Yet those wind-torn hours represented only the first stage of the relentless triple tragedy that Katrina brought to the entire Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Mississippi to Alabama.

Music??
Revisado: 04-11-16
Good story and well read. Book moved through a description of the storm's effects and then was appropriately critical of the response by the government. However, the author also highlighted response aspects that performed well. For some reason, there are moments when very unnecessary music is played. Audiobooks do not need musical enhancement for the sake of drama, in my opinion.
