Historia
Here is William Dalrymple's highly praised and greatly entertaining account of his 1986 trip made while a student at Cambridge, which retraced Marco Polo's route across land from Jerusalem to Xanadu. With him, he took a phial of Holy Oil, 600 pounds and Laura until Lahore, and Louisa from there to Xanadu.

It isn't exactly a thriller. The book is kind of repetitive. I would not recommend.

Historia
Shortlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize. A Guardian Fiction Book of the year. Sometimes discovery brings destruction. "When We Cease to Understand the World" shows us great minds striking out into dangerous, uncharted terrain. Fritz Haber, Alexander Grothendieck, Werner Heisenberg, Erwin Schrödinger: these are among the luminaries into whose troubled minds we are thrust as they grapple with the most profound questions of existence. They have strokes of unparalleled genius, they alienate friends and lovers, they descend into isolated states of madness.

Not a fan of how reality and fiction are blended
Revisado: 01-15-24
Performance is great, as is the writing style. Personally, I didn't enjoy how fact and fiction are blended together. Also, the author seems convinced that truly genius breakthroughs require a scientist to push themself to the edge of the abyss. An overdone trope imo.

Historia
Award-winning journalist Masha Gessen's understanding of the events and forces that have wracked Russia in recent times is unparalleled. In The Future Is History, Gessen follows the lives of four people born at what promised to be the dawn of democracy. Each of them came of age with unprecedented expectations, some as the children and grandchildren of the very architects of the new Russia, each with newfound aspirations of their own - as entrepreneurs, activists, thinkers, and writers, sexual and social beings.

Going myself struggling to keep up. Well written and super interesting, though tough read for someone like me who isn't well versed in either Russian history or sociology

Good narration, not enough emphasis on validating the theory
Revisado: 11-22-23
Good narration, not enough emphasis on validating the theory. The theory is largely just posited and used to explain how you should view the current political environment.
Preferably, more effort is put in explaining and validating the theory.

Historia
We know of psychopaths from chilling headlines and stories in the news and movies - from Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy to Hannibal Lecter and Dexter Morgan. As Dr. Kent Kiehl shows, psychopaths can be identified by a checklist of symptoms that includes pathological lying; lack of empathy, guilt, and remorse; grandiose sense of self-worth; manipulation; and failure to accept one’s actions. But why do psychopaths behave the way they do? Is it the result of their environment - how they were raised - or is there a genetic component to their lack of conscience?

Insightful read, great popular science writing!
Revisado: 11-16-23
The book left me with a more profound understanding of the symptoms and underlying mechanisms of the disorder. Great science writing overall. Does not lean too heavily on spectacular cases, rather it finds the right balance of anecdotes and science to gel into easy reading material

A horrifying story brought to life by a great writer. David Grann knows how to weave together individual stories to paint a larger picture.
