We live in an increasingly absurd nightmare of climate change, late stage Capitalism, and increasing totalitarianism. This course on Hope is to be practiced daily dealing with the difficulties of our world as they are. There are no easy answers or magical, optimistic way out, but there is a way through-courageously and together. The author's narration lends a power to her personal stories and examples. Amazing and timely.

Historia
Founded by the mysterious genius known as the Designer, the archipelago of Prospera lies hidden from the horrors of a deteriorating outside world. In this island paradise, Prospera’s lucky citizens enjoy long, fulfilling lives until the monitors embedded in their forearms, meant to measure their physical health and psychological well-being, fall below 10 percent. Then they retire themselves, embarking on a ferry ride to the island known as the Nursery, where their failing bodies are renewed, their memories are wiped clean, and they are readied to restart life afresh.

Fantastic Concept. Sublime and Surreal.
Revisado: 06-07-23
Great concept twisting and turning through eco-dystopian nightmare, surreal dreamscape, mysterious metaphysical imaginings, and the ethics of survival. At times, the narration struck me as over the top and melodramatic. Over-acting.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Superlatives Aren't Enough
Revisado: 04-26-23
It's been a long time since any novel jumped straight onto my all time favorites list before I finished reading it. Kingsolver is one of my favorite writers and I expect to love her books, but this story so far exceeded even a fan's extremely high expectations. Demon Copperhead - the character as well as the novel - is a worthy heir to David Copperfield. Perhaps the best naration performance I've yet listened to as well. Charlie Thurston is so good that at times it feels like Demon is telling you his story over coffee.

Historia
Isaac Fitzgerald has lived many lives. He's been an altar boy, a bartender, a fat kid, a smuggler, a biker, a prince of New England. But before all that, he was a bomb that exploded his parents' lives—or so he was told. In Dirtbag, Massachusetts, Fitzgerald, with warmth and humor, recounts his ongoing search for forgiveness, a more far-reaching vision of masculinity, and a more expansive definition of family and self.

Ultimately Life Affirming
Revisado: 09-09-22
Like most of us, Fitzgerald's life has its pain as well its triumphs. His reading of his own words, I imagine is not unlike listening to him over a beer in a bar. His style reminds me of David Sedaris autobiographical work . Even though the trauma of his early life has him at times pondering ending it all, his story is ultimately life affirming. No one's life is perfect and pain free, yet learning from your mistakes not only makes one wise, but allows you a life worth living.

Historia
For cynical 23-year-old August, moving to New York City is supposed to prove her right: that things like magic and cinematic love stories don’t exist, and the only smart way to go through life is alone. She can’t imagine how waiting tables at a 24-hour pancake diner and moving in with too many weird roommates could possibly change that. And there’s certainly no chance of her subway commute being anything more than a daily trudge through boredom and electrical failures.

Historia
What story begins in a bedroom in suburban New Jersey in the early '60s, unfolds on some of the country's largest stages, and then ranges across the globe, demonstrating over and over again how rock and roll has the power to change the world for the better? This story. The first true heartbeat of Unrequited Infatuations is the moment when Stevie Van Zandt trades in his devotion to the Baptist religion for an obsession with rock and roll.

Good Editing Goes Unoticed. Poor Editing Doesn't.
Revisado: 11-02-21
I LOVE Little Steven. His solo albums in the 1980s helped me become an activist. I Ain't Gonna Play Sun City is a medal stand protest song. I was so looking forward to this book. The Good Parts are AWESOME, but at times Stevie sounds needlessly bitter or jealous. sometimes he goes into too much detail and other times he'd have been better with more. The inner politics of the Rock & Roll HoF would have been better as an essay in the New Yorker. As is too often the case with Baby Boomers, he over-glorifies the 1960s musically and otherwise. He is IMO on the side of good politically, but ruins his impact by not thinking through his solutions. For example, solitary confinement is torture not a solution to the school to prison pipeline. This is a Must listen/read for Fans, but I think others won't stay with it through the end. The songs are Great but the band's not tight.

Historia
Evan Michaels struggles with being different, with having the complete memories of two other people who lived sequentially before him. He fights loneliness and believes he is unique until he meets Poppy. She recognizes his struggle because she is like him, except that she is much older, remembering seven consecutive lives. But there is something else she must share with Evan - she is a member of the secretive Cognomina. They are, in effect, immortals - compiling experiences and skills over lifetimes into near superhuman abilities that they have used to drive history over centuries.

Merullo's Volya Rinpoche is the real deal, a humble guy who understands being human and sees the world as it is in all its beauty and all its trauma. Otto is me and you and all of us just wanting to find a way through. A teacher and a student on a road trip home. Be careful - you will smile in recognition of yourself, cry for the pain of the world, and most likely meditate or do yoga before you finish the story... if you don't already that is.

The Sparrow hits ALL the Marks
Revisado: 08-11-21
Russell's story is even MORE powerful in the wake of the Catholic Church's priest sex abuse scandal. Russell forces the reader to wrestle with the Doctrine of Discovery and Colonialism, the arrogance of Mission, Patriarchy, cultural relativity, Sexism, slavery, rape, Capitalism, evolution, AND the nature of God, the meaning of Freedom and free will, good and evil, the nature of language, and Love, with the beauty of art, poetry, music, and the romance of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence as well. The reader's performance is exemplary!

Powerful, Immediate, Necessary!
Revisado: 06-30-21
Clint Smith writes with a full range of dynamics and a powerful command of both language and subject matter. By turns elegant, poetic, reflective, demanding, and sometimes like a moving sermon he examines how we learn and teach the history of enslavement and white supremacy by visiting museums and historical sites and the narrative they tell and don't tell about our nation's shameful past and why the present struggle remains so difficult. This is a creative addition to the modern classics on the history of racism and white supremacy. Remember it's not "rewriting history", but rather correcting the rewriting done by white washing and finally telling the whole truth.
