It seems like the perfect job. Great wages, accommodation provided and all located within the walls of Highwood Hall, a stunning stately home owned by the Howard family. Not many little girls dream of becoming a maid, but this is an opportunity for me to get back on my feet. And for me to revisit my past....

Loved the narrator and the twists. The character formation was a little quick but it’s also a thriller.

Meh
Revisado: 02-03-25
This was an awful read for many reasons but the first is that it is disjointed at best. Chapters that are 2-5 minutes long, weird sentence structure that often left me wondering. I am disappointed that I wasted a credit on this book.

Great read. Kristin Hannah has such deep writing style, and the narrator made it well worth the listen. Some parts of the story were a little soap-opera-ish, but all in all, stellar listen.

Historia
Ten years ago, the Harper family disappeared. Their deserted cottage was left with the water running, the television playing cartoons, the oven ready for baking. The doors were locked from the inside. Overnight, the sleepy village of Nighbrook became notorious as the scene of the unsolved mystery of the decade, an epicentre for ghoulish media speculation. For crime journalist Naomi, solving the case has turned into an obsession. So now, with Ivy Cottage finally listed for sale, it’s her chance to mount an investigation like no other.

What a plot twist…or 5!!
Revisado: 05-17-22
First I want to start by saying that Elizabeth Knowelden has an excellent voice, she has perfect pitch when it comes to the dramatic parts of the story, and her subtle intonation make it easy to decipher between the characters. This book was really just full of plot twists. I loved how the narrative started out, the character build up was excellent, and the eventual dénouement was phenomenal. Caroline Mitchell wrote an excellent story, and my daughter and I couldn’t wait to drive to and from school so we could listen to the next chapter. We finally binged and finished it last night because we couldn’t wait. This is a super book for adults for sure, but also a 15-year-old. Super enjoyable, fun read, and this will be perfect for someone who is spending the summer at the beach. Can’t wait to try another Caroline Mitchell story.

Great pandemic story
Revisado: 10-26-21
Loved this book from start to finish. Great character development, and you truly come to despise the bad guys. The story flows nicely and has a secondary story with a cast in Viet Nam. The narrator has a smooth voice that can keep you focused on what she’s saying, snd within a chapter or two you understand her vocal nuances so you know which character she is at that moment. It took me a while to get through because I myself got sick during the pandemic, but once I picked up where I left off, I was right back in the drama unfolding. Good twists and turns along the way.

Enraptured by romantic tales of battlefield surgery, he enlists, expecting a position at a well-organized field hospital. Historia
At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another. But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed....

Jesus can turn loss into glory
Revisado: 04-22-21
I read this book as a youth of 12 or 13, but to listen again as a 54 yo woman, to the staggering numbers of those brutalized and killed, almost seems unimaginable. But the best part of this book are knowing/learning about the blessed lives of the ten Boom family and how they endured the unendurable, all while glorifying God. I hope if I am ever in that position I could be as faithful and strong.
Wanda McCaddon was an excellent choice for narration as she seems to have a European accent of sorts, that’s not difficult to understand at all, and I felt her accent added authenticity. She has excellent enunciation and diction and a great pace. I also loved the slight changes she would use to differ between characters in this book.
It is a book that is marketed for the youth and I believe it was required reading when I was in Junior High. I’m glad I listened again. It’s a thoroughly amazing and horrible journey through the depths of earthly hell, and how reliance on the King of Kings can see you through even the darkest of days. Something this earth needs more of today. It also tells the absolute satanic story of the Germans and their vitriol and evilness and what can happen when we as a society, “turn an eye”. This should be required reading for adults as well. Thank you Audible for putting this out here for free.

Historia
Margaret "Peggy" Thomas and her husband, James, lead a simple and peaceful life; she tends to the farm while he works as sheriff in the nearby town of Bleak Knob. Their evenings are spent doing the thing they love most - being together. One afternoon, after picking up fabric at the general store, Margaret watches helplessly as James is gunned down on the sidewalk in front of her. Days of mourning turn into weeks and then years, filled with little more than grief and alcohol.

Such an unexpectedly good listen!
Revisado: 03-15-21
Carol Monda’s gravelly voice and nuances made this one great read. I usually don’t listen to anything of this nature but I was more than pleasantly Surprised at how well written, the good twist and turns, the excellent reading skills of the narrator, and the storyline was magnificent. Highly recommended if I could give this more than five stars I would.
