This is the story of Brian Shipp who began shoplifting at the age of 10 and whose crimes escalated over the years until he found himself serving 7 years to life for kidnap robbery. His motivation is the desire for the finer things in life. Thirty eight years later he is taking responsibility for his crimes & seems to be doing positive things in prison both for others and to prepare for his possible release. I'm familiar with places he described in Northern California prior to his incarceration as well as music from that era & long since closed stores giving the story an authentic feel. This is an interesting & easy read which ends on a hopeful note. I highly recommend it!

Having been a very protective mom, I was shocked to read that Jay Jay was smoking his parent's marijuana butts by age 10 & drinking their alcohol. He was an addict by age 12 snorting coke, using LSD, mushrooms, and alcohol. He was sent to CYA by age 12 and had no visitors. During that time he played many sports & got his GED. He was in AA by age 17 1/2. This story tore at my heartstrings because of his incredibly young age. It made me so thankful for my own upbringing and made me teary eyed. Jay Jay ends his story with hope and I pray he gets the help he needs to transition from prison to real life.

I've read a lot of true crime books but, until this crime series, none written by the criminals while still incarcerated.

Cjay's life couldn't be more different than my own. She's a transgender who was born male but felt at a young age that she was a girl. The book chronicles her descent into crime and addiction eventually leading to her incarceration in several prisons including San Quentin where she is now. She tells a shocking story about her lifestyle and the many horrors she endured. In the end she takes responsibility for her actions and still has hope because of her belief that God loves her.
